Job overview

We are looking for a 2 i/c MFL to join our outstanding school as we grow into our seventh year.  William Perkin Church of England High School opened as a Free School in September 2013 with its first intake of Year 7 students, and now has six year groups (7 - 12) totalling almost 1,160 students.  The school is rated ‘Outstanding’ in all areas by Ofsted (June 2015) and SIAMS (October 2016) and is oversubscribed on first choice applicants.   We offer French, German, Spanish, and some Latin, and this role is most suited to applicants who can teach French to A Level and, ideally, a second language to GCSE.

The new 2i/c MFL will be responsible for supporting the Head of Department in ensuring that achievement in is outstanding at all key stages, with robust curriculum and assessment frameworks, and a variety of extracurricular opportunities, to support this.

The main purpose of this role is to ensure outstanding outcomes in the curriculum and the wider curricular offer within MFL. S/he will be an enthusiastic linguist who is a strong classroom practitioner with a commitment to achieving the highest standards both academically and in terms of engagement with MFL. In addition, for approximately 2 terms the new post holder will be acting Head of Department with an increased allowance to reflect this extra responsibility.

As a language specialism school, William Perkin places languages as central to its curriculum.  All students have languages every day and languages is compulsory at GCSE which means that the students make excellent progress.  Our results at GCSE this year were outstanding, the school as a whole came 8th in the country for Progress 8, and the language department was no exception, coming comfortably in the top 5% of similar schools nationally (Fisher Family Trust data). Out of 174 entries with a mixed ability cohort, 40% of our students achieved Grade 7 and above; 65% achieved grade 5 and above and 78% achieved grade 4 and above – well above national averages. The value placed on languages in the school is evident in our A level numbers – our Sixth Form opened in September 2018 and we currently have 22 students studying languages at A level.  All languages are offered at A Level.

We additionally run extracurricular Language provision including offering wider languages (from Mandarin to Ancient Greek), national competitions such as the UK Linguistics Olympiad and Foreign Language Spelling Bee, TAFAL project, and clubs around History, Film, Literature and Drama.  The Twyford Trust Languages Specialism provides a range of exciting and collaborative ventures, such as trips to target language countries to enable our students to experience and use their language learning in an authentic context.  This year we are running trips to Normandy, Madrid, Berlin, Rouen and Mönchengladbach.
