Job overview

We are looking for a Second-in-charge of the MFL Department to join our Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ school as we grow into our sixth year. We offer French, German, Spanish, and some Latin, and this role is most suited to applicants who can teach two languages to GCSE and at least one language (preferably French) to A Level.

William Perkin Church of England High School opened in September 2013 and our Sixth Form will open this September. The Twyford Trust’s fourth school – Ada Lovelace CE High School – is due to open in temporary accommodation (on the William Perkin site) in September 2018. The new post-holders(s) will be joining us at a time of growth and the Trust therefore offers excellent promotion prospects for motivated and energetic teachers who support the ethos of our schools.

The Languages Department at William Perkin currently consists of eight teachers plus Head of Department. All Year 7 students learn French and most learn Latin; in Year 8 students learn French and Latin, with some also beginning German or Spanish as an additional language. GCSE study begins from Year 9 with French, German, Spanish and Latin available at GCSE level. We are offering all modern languages at A level and are committed to developing our KS5 offer as a languages specialism school.

The department prides itself on being innovative and ambitious, seeking to deliver an outstanding array of curricular and extracurricular opportunities in order to nurture excellent students with a love of learning about other languages and cultures. Schemes of work are developed collaboratively by all members of the department, and are differentiated into three tiers – Advanced, Higher and Core – to suit learners of different abilities. These Schemes of Work have aspirational and ambitious outcomes, and students’ daily languages lessons allow for sustained progress and thorough understanding, which is monitored through half-termly assessments. Previous results from these assessments show outstanding progress.

The Twyford Trust Languages Specialism provides a range of exciting and collaborative ventures, such as a number of trips to target language countries to enable our students to experience and use their language learning in an authentic context. We run trips to Normandy, Madrid and Berlin as well as having exchanges to each country. We will be developing these trips further for KS5.

For more information about the schools please see the Trust and William Perkin websites, and for the job description, details about how to apply and the supplementary document A Vision for Languages please see the Vacancies page on the Twyford Trust website at: http://www.twyfordacademies.org.uk/recruitment/vacancies

William Perkin Church of England High School is a highly successful and heavily oversubscribed school which achieves exceptional outcomes for its students. It opened as a Free School in September 2013 and its progress measures at GCSE have consistently placed it in the top 5% of schools nationally and it has a flourishing sixth form with a particular specialism in STEM subjects. William Perkin works closely with Imperial College London, The Royal Society and the Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS) to ensure our success as a centre of excellence for Science. It serves the local community in North Greenford but benefits from being part of the Twyford CE Academies Trust which is the top-performing MAT in the UK. William Perkin has a strong and distinctively Christian ethos with open admissions criteria. The school is rated ‘Outstanding’ in all areas by Ofsted (June 2015) and was very successful in its recent SIAMS inspection (January 2024). https://williamperkin.org.uk/
