ROLE SUMMARY:

 

King’s College, The British School of Madrid (Soto de Viñuelas) is seeking an experienced and highly responsible Head of Boarding (Residential Director) to lead all residential, pastoral and operational aspects of the Summer Camp programme running from 18 June to 25 July 2026. This senior leadership role carries overall responsibility for student wellbeing, safeguarding, staff supervision and the smooth running of daily residential operations.

 

The Residential Director oversees academic, activities and residential teams, manages complex logistics including accommodation, transport, medication and dietary needs, and acts as the primary point of contact for parents during the programme. The role requires strong leadership, exceptional organisation and the ability to remain calm and decisive in high-pressure situations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Provide overall leadership of the residential camp and ensure excellent pastoral care for all students.

  • Supervise academic, activities and residential teams, providing clear direction and support.

  • Create and manage staff rotas, timetables and daily operational schedules.

  • Oversee accommodation, dorm allocations, transport, medication, allergies and dietary requirements.

  • Coordinate arrivals, departures and airport transfers.

  • Lead and supervise excursions and off-site activities, ensuring safety and safeguarding standards are met.

  • Manage parent communication, including concerns, incidents and emergency updates.

  • Maintain safeguarding, health and safety compliance and emergency procedures.

  • Lead staff training days and daily staff meetings.

  • Support incident and medical response in collaboration with camp medical staff.

  • Manage petty cash and camp resources responsibly.

  • Ensure staff compliance with school procedures, safeguarding standards and professional conduct.  

             

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

 

  • English C2 level and Spanish C1 level.

  • At least 3 years’ experience in residential life within similar programmes.

  • Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in recreation, camps, outdoor education, youth programming or related fields.

  • Previous experience working with high school students as a camp counsellor, tutor or similar role.

  • Proven experience supervising staff and providing dynamic leadership to teams.

  • Strong organisational, administrative and team-management skills.

  • Experience overseeing timetables, staff duties and daily operations.

  • Experience managing parent communication and incident handling.

  • Experience coordinating large groups of children in residential settings.

  • Ability to manage logistics including transport, dorms, medication, allergies and special requirements.

  • Experience leading training days and daily staff meetings.

  • Strong safeguarding awareness and commitment to student welfare.

  • Ability to maintain calm, effective leadership in crisis situations.

  • Experience managing petty cash and camp resources.

  • Ability to lead and supervise excursions, ensuring safety of students and staff.

  • Demonstrated excellence in pastoral care and student support.

  • Degree in Education, Child Development or related field (preferred).

1. Local Area Information
The main site of the school is approximately twenty km from Madrid. Largely surrounded by countryside the school offers an excellent educational environment. By September nearly all teaching rooms will be equipped with interactive whiteboards and computers linked to the whole school wireless network.

Madrid itself offers a wide range of cultural, sporting and social opportunities. The range of world class art galleries, museums and architecture really do make it one of Europe’s great cities. To the north of Madrid are a number of mountain ranges offering wildlife, superb hiking and in winter, skiing. The nearest ski station to Madrid is forty five minutes away.

On the social front, Madrid has been described as the city that never sleeps. The Madrid culture is based around the café culture. It is not unusual for the city to have traffic jams at three in the morning. Whilst the culture is lively it is never threatening unlike some city centres you may come across in the UK. The city and its surrounds offers a really good quality of life for those willing to embrace the Spanish culture.

2. School details
King’s College has in excess of 1500 students and will, over the next three years expand to more than 2000. It is spread over three sites with the main site being situated about twenty km out of Madrid.

Results are excellent with a 93% GCSE pass rate and a 98% pass rate at A Level. The sixth form is one of the largest in Europe and students enter into, in the main, the Russell group of universities in the UK, the Ivy League in the USA and top universities in Spain. One of the great strengths of the school is the working environment. Classrooms have the usual interactive whiteboards etc but the relationship between teachers and students is very good. A strong work ethic means teachers really can concentrate on teaching, pastoral issues do arise but behaviour issues are very rare.
