Job Purpose 

The PE and Personal Development Teacher will be responsible for delivering high-quality Physical Education and Personal Development lessons that support students’ physical wellbeing, personal growth and preparation for adulthood. 

The role promotes healthy lifestyles, teamwork, resilience and confidence while supporting students to develop important life skills such as emotional wellbeing, independence, employability and responsible citizenship. 

The post holder will contribute to a positive school culture by promoting inclusion, supporting behaviour expectations and ensuring that all students are encouraged to participate, engage and achieve their full potential. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

Teaching and Learning 

  • Plan and deliver engaging and inclusive Physical Education lessons that promote participation, teamwork and physical wellbeing. 

  • Deliver Personal Development lessons that support students’ social, emotional and life skills development. 

  • Adapt lessons to meet the needs of students with differing abilities and learning needs. 

  • Use a range of teaching strategies to support student engagement, motivation and achievement. 

  • Create a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel encouraged to participate. 

 

Personal Development 

  • Deliver a structured Personal Development curriculum that supports students’ social, moral, spiritual and cultural development (SMSC). 

  • Promote British Values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance. 

  • Support students to develop confidence, resilience and independence. 

  • Provide opportunities for students to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills through sport and physical activity. 

  • Promote healthy lifestyles, physical wellbeing and mental health awareness. 

  • Support students to understand online safety, healthy relationships and personal responsibility. 

  • Prepare students for life beyond school, including further education, employment and independent living. 

  • Encourage students to develop respect for diversity and equality. 

  • Contribute to enrichment opportunities and experiences that broaden students’ personal development. 

 

Assessment and Monitoring 

  • Assess and monitor student progress in both PE and Personal Development. 

  • Provide feedback that supports student improvement and achievement. 

  • Maintain accurate records of participation, achievement and progress. 

  • Contribute to student reporting processes where required. 

 

Behaviour and Pastoral Support 

  • Promote high expectations of behaviour, respect and engagement within lessons. 

  • Support students in developing positive relationships and social skills. 

  • Contribute to a positive and supportive school culture. 

 

Safeguarding and Student Welfare 

  • Promote a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment. 

  • Follow all safeguarding and child protection procedures. 

  • Report safeguarding concerns in line with school policy. 

  • Ensure safe practice and risk awareness during all physical activities. 

 

Wider School Contribution 

  • Support school events, sports activities and enrichment opportunities where appropriate. 

  • Contribute to the development and improvement of the PE and Personal Development curriculum. 

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to support whole-school improvement. 

  • Participate in meetings and school activities as required.

Person Specification 

Qualifications 

Essential 

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or relevant teaching qualification 

  • Degree in Physical Education, Sport, Education or a related field 

Desirable 

  • Training or qualifications related to Personal Development, PSHE or wellbeing education 

  • First Aid qualification 

 

Experience 

Essential 

  • Experience teaching Physical Education 

  • Experience working with young people in an educational setting 

  • Experience supporting students with varying abilities and learning needs 

Desirable 

  • Experience delivering Personal Development, PSHE or wellbeing programmes 

  • Experience working within an independent school or alternative provision 

  • Experience supporting students with additional needs 

 

Knowledge and Understanding 

Essential 

  • Knowledge of effective PE teaching strategies 

  • Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities within schools 

  • Understanding of behaviour management strategies 

Desirable 

  • Knowledge of Personal Development, PSHE or wellbeing frameworks 

  • Understanding of Ofsted expectations within independent schools 

 

Skills and Abilities 

Essential 

  • Ability to plan and deliver engaging and inclusive lessons 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 

  • Ability to motivate and encourage student participation 

  • Ability to manage behaviour effectively within practical environments 

  • Strong organisational and planning skills 

Desirable 

  • Ability to organise sports activities or enrichment opportunities 

  • Ability to support students’ personal and social development
