Anton Bruckner International School is seeking to recruit an experienced and qualified PYP Student Counselor to start in September 2026.
The School Counselor is expected to:
Provide counselling support to students and consultation to parents
Direct and support teachers in dealing with students who are facing challenges
Support teachers in the delivery of aspects of the SEL curriculum
Advise the curricular integration of the SEL curriculum
Work across universal (whole-school), targeted (small group), and individual levels of support
Collaborate closely with the Learning Support team while maintaining clear distinctions between academic and social-emotional support
Skills and Qualifications
Qualified school counseling degree (Master’s preferred)
Fluent in English and preferably German
Experience in an international school context is essential, IB experience preferable
Two years minimum as school/student counselor
Commitment to ongoing IB and other professional development
Willingness to develop and promote a growing school, staff, and student body
Commitment to diversity and inclusion in addition to adapting and developing pedagogy
Be able to provide a background check (criminal record)
Positive, collaborative, and approachable interpersonal style
Key Responsibilities
The School Counselor works as part of a collaborative student support system, including leadership, learning support, and safeguarding teams.
Counseling and Student Support
The School Counselor is expected to:
Provide personal counseling for students relating to emotional, social and academic concerns
Evaluate referred students with social/emotional/behavioural problems which affect optimal academic progress
Work with staff to create conditions in which individual students can develop their potential, and achieve a personal sense of worth and mastery
Design and facilitate targeted small group interventions where appropriate
Identify, support and ensure the safety of ‘at-risk students’ (including maintaining a register of these students)
Advocate for students (specific needs for individuals or more general student-body concerns)
Provide knowledge, skills and opportunities to enable students to become sufficiently empowered, in order to make healthy choices for themselves
Provide expertise to parents and staff in developing relationships and communication with students
Contribute to initiatives that support a positive and inclusive school environment
Connect with support systems outside of school (e.g., therapists, etc.)
Maintain appropriate, confidential records of student support and interventions
Use data and professional observations to inform interventions and evaluate impact
Safegaurding and Student Protection
The School Counselor is expected to:
Uphold and actively contribute to the school’s safeguarding and child protection policies
Recognise, respond to, and document safeguarding concerns appropriately
Maintain appropriate confidentiality, with clear understanding of its professional limits in safeguarding contexts
Collaboration and Communication
The School Counselor is expected to:
Consult with parents and provide them with support and information as appropriate
Serve as a liaison between the school, home, and outside agencies to which the student may be referred to for additional assistance
Work effectively as a member of collaborative teams
Work collaboratively with the medical team
Work closely with the Principal, Deputy Principal, and Program Coordinators to share relevant student development and intervention information
Ensure communication is handled with professionalism and confidentiality
Teaching and Learning
The School Counselor is expected to:
Teach lessons related to the SEL program
Collaborate with teachers to facilitate and support the teaching of the SEL curriculum
Contribute to parent information workshops and counselling-related events as appropriate
Serve as a resource and provide advice to staff on child and adolescent development and social, emotional and behavioural issues
Contribute to professional learning for staff as appropriate
Support and contribute to the development of the school’s SEL programme
General Responsibilities
The role is expected to:
Attend meetings throughout the year outside the school core day if required.
Support community related activities in the promotion of the ‘life of the school’.
Provide support for other activities as deemed appropriate by the Principal within the scope of responsibilities as Student Counselor.
Any other duties that may, from time to time, reasonably be required within the general level of responsibility of the post.
