The Religious Education Department at Salesian

The Religious Education Department at Salesian is a key department at Salesian, and we work together with Chaplaincy to develop the spiritual and moral life of our students.  We are enthusiastic, engaging and proud to work with the vision of St. John Bosco.  Behaviour and relationships are exceptional, and we are highly regarded by students in lessons and throughout the liturgical experience they are offered.

We strive to continually improve our excellent academic record, our spiritual engagement, and our development of a faith community.  We are extremely happy with our results with over 40% 9-7 and over 75% 9-5 at GCSE as well as over 75% A*-B and 100% A*-C at A Level.  Currently there are nine specialist RE teachers, as well as Salesian clergy and a Chaplain.

All students study R.E. in each year at Salesian. At Key Stage 3, the Curriculum is varied and carefully planned supported by a wide range of department resources.  At Key Stage 4 all students undertake the full GCSE, following AQA specification B (Catholic Christianity, Judaism, and Moral Themes).  We are a popular subject in our Sixth Form College and the number of students taking A Level Religious Studies is rising consistently each year. We offer the Religious Studies: Philosophy and Ethics ‘A’ level with AQA.  All students undertake Sixth Form R.E. within which the EPQ is completed.

Our connection to Don Bosco and the Salesian community is evident throughout the whole school.  His vision to educate to a high standard, instil moral value and foster positive experiences both inside and outside of the classroom is supported and furthered by our department.  We are fully committed to the extra-curricular life of the students and we are involved in a variety of trips and activities such as visits to Rome, religious exhibitions and visits to places of worship.

We are also proud that daily prayer opportunities, Masses and Exposition with our on-site priest, are always well attended.  Sacraments are offered and whole school Masses are celebrated and enjoyed by the entire school community.  Clubs such as Youth Club, CAFOD young leaders, and Salesian Compassion in Action are offered by members of the department.

As a Teaching school and SCITT we are committed to teacher training and take a range of trainees as well as offering support for NQTs and those looking to progress to the next stage of their career.

We are extremely proud of our department at Salesian and look forward greatly to welcoming a colleague who is passionate about the progression of our students both academically and spiritually, as we are.

Salesian School is characterised by the philosophy of the Salesian founder St John Bosco (1815-1888). He stressed high educational standards and sound moral and religious education. He insisted too on a friendly atmosphere in his schools where the idea of community could be fostered. We strive to ensure that every student experiences personally, a happy atmosphere that will help them to leave the school with a high level of confidence in their own abilities as well as excellent examination results. These goals are delivered through a strong pastoral system, excellent learning and teaching and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, physical and social extra-curricular activities.

It is at the foundation of our values to:

  • Develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit
  • Ensure relationships are key
  • Ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the children
  • Ensure that everything we do is based on Gospel values

We promise parents and students that we will:

  • Ensure that students get the best results they are capable of achieving
  • Develop the skills and attributes that students will need to be successful in the world of the future
  • Develop the morals and values of our students to help them lead decent Christian lives and go on to promote these values throughout the world

We who work in Salesian Schools state our belief in our young people. We recognise that they come from differing backgrounds but that they are of equal value to God and to us. In the spirit of St John Bosco, we turn our efforts to those who stand in special need because of lack of material or emotional security.

We set out to create in our schools a joyful atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and member of staff is recognised, developed and safeguarded. Our schools are noted for an atmosphere of welcome where all feel at home and a sense of safety and security. Staff are willing to be present with the pupils in friendship and to go that one step further, where this is necessary, to meet the needs of young people.

We strive to affirm, develop and challenge the abilities of each. We are concerned with the way in which each person matures within the context of the community. While recognising that national standards have a part to play, in seeking to achieve these, we emphasise the unique path each person will take. Our main criterion is personal worth. We prepare young people to be a positive influence in the places where they live and work with others.

Within our Salesian Schools we foster the spiritual, moral and religious development of our pupils and a lively celebration of prayer. In this, we respect where each one stands and his or her basic freedom to choose. However, we strive to present these important features of school life in a way that speaks to the needs and concerns of our young people.

We recognise that in our present age there are many social and educational tensions that stretch our staff, at times, to breaking point. In our schools, therefore, we undertake to affirm our commitment to and support for each other.

We also recognise that we are part of a network of schools within the Diocese and Local Area. We appreciate and respect the work of colleagues in these schools.
