Description To liaise and work with parents, carers and the Aboriginal community and St Patrick's Primary School, Cessnock (10.5 hrs /wk Mondays and Fridays), provide literacy and numeracy assistance to Aboriginal students. This is a temporary appointment for 2021.



Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.
Position Requirements • must have a competent level of literacy and numeracy


• liaising with the families of Aboriginal children and conducting home visits


• ability to work as a member of a team


• must be willing to support the ethos of the Catholic School


• must be capable of working independently and under supervision of the Aboriginal Education Coordinator


• must have an understanding of the local Aboriginal community & networks


• must have an understanding and experience in working with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students and community
Essential Criteria • Working With Children number on application.
Desirable Criteria • have experience working with children who demonstrate challenging behaviours within the primary school setting

• have a current drivers licence

• experience working with young children

• experience developing partnerships between home and school

• experience planning NAIDOC and Reconciliation events

• experience delivering cultural programs in schools

• demonstrated capacity to deliver Intervention Programs

• ability to interpret student data

St Patrick's Primary School is an independent, co-educational, mainstream school in Cessnock, New South Wales. The school is located in the Hunter Valley region and caters for children from Kindergarten to Year 6. There are currently 370 students enrolled.

The school was opened in 1887 in St Patrick’s Church at Nulkaba by the sisters of St Joseph’s. The ‘Building the Education Revolution’ grant funded new facilities in 2012.

The school has a well-resourced library and computer room with 32 desktop computers and the same number of laptops and iPads. A multi-purpose room is available for creative arts, meetings and sports. 

St Patrick’s holds an annual school concert/showcase where students perform on the school stage in choir singing, dance, drama, verse/poetry recital and percussion bands.

Curriculum

The school follows the NSW State Curriculum. Maths is taught every day for an hour and students have a 100-minute Literacy block, five days a week. Literacy activities are also incorporated into library and computer lessons. Students participate in 30-minute Religious Education lessons each day following the Maitland/Newcastle Diocese Religion structure. The students have 20-minute library sessions once a week to borrow books to take home.
