Required from January 2023

The Governors wish to appoint two Academic Mentors to support student achievement throughout the school. One Academic Mentor will largely support students in our English department and one Academic Mentor will largely support students in our Maths department. Please specify on your application form which post you are applying for and candidates are able to apply for both posts.

The successful applicants will be hard working, flexible, and have excellent communication skills. It is essential that any applicant enjoys working with and supporting young people, as this is an essential part of the role. In addition, we are looking for candidates who can engage very well with learners, work successfully as part of a departmental team and lead individual and small group sessions with students to support their academic progress in English/Literacy or Maths/Numeracy. Successful candidates may also be asked to support students in other areas of the school.

The successful candidates would also need to be prepared to support the Catholic/Christian ethos at St Mary’s in these roles.  Full training and unstinting support will be available, to allow those appointed to flourish in these posts. English or Maths at GCSE Grade C or equivalent is required and previous experience of working with children or young people, as well as A Level or degree level qualifications in English or Maths, are desirable. There is the potential for these roles to become permanent roles at St Mary’s from September 2023 onwards.

St Mary’s is a very popular and happy school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted. We became an academy in 2013 and enjoy outstanding facilities in a new building, which opened in 2011. We joined the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust in June 2020. We are also very popular with parents and are one of the most over-subscribed schools in the North-East. The roll has grown from around 1100 five years ago to over 1450 by September 2021, with 5 year groups of around 240. The Sixth Form currently has over 270 students, but will grow to around 300 in the next couple of years, as larger and strongly academic year groups move into Sixth Form. This is a wonderful opportunity to join a highly successful and forward thinking school.

In addition, we lead much school to school support, initial teacher training and CPD and leadership development within our Trust and more widely. As a result, further opportunities for professional development are wide-ranging and an added attraction for potential new staff.

If you require any further information about the post, please do not hesitate to contact Louise Douds, Director of Finance and Support Services on 0191 215 3264.

Application packs are available to download here and from our school website.

Closing date: 9.00am on Friday 9th December 2022. Interviews are likely to take place shortly after this date.

The school is fully committed to safeguarding and the welfare of children and young people. This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check and an online search for shortlisted candidates, as part of our due diligence.
