In March 2016 James Dyson met with the Universities Minister, Jo Johnson, to discuss the acute shortage of graduate engineers in the UK. He invited James to be the first to take full advantage of the new Higher Education and Research Act and build the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology – a brand new type of higher education institution.
As part of the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology the Academic Tutor will be responsible for managing and supporting with the undergraduate’s self-study time. Working closely with the Technical Manager, UK Technical Director and staff from the University of Warwick they will organise and run sessions to aid the undergraduate’s academic development. This role is part time for 2 days per week.
You will report into the Technical Manager of the Dyson Institute.
Dyson HQ, is tucked away in the Wiltshire countryside, our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology).
The growing campus is the heartbeat of Dyson. Benefitting from an onsite Gym, sports pitch, multiple cafes and a nature walk. Over 2,000 people, including James himself, spend their days strategizing, inventing technology and telling the Dyson story to the world.
By September 2018, Malmesbury will be a 24hr campus and our campus extension will be built – 78 pods, crafted in Scotland and transported by lorry to Malmesbury, will be installed on site to house our first-year undergraduates and our new Club House will become the social centre for 3,500 employees and Undergraduates at Dyson. We’ll recruit a further 45 undergraduates, and then 50 – before you know it, we’ll have a 200-strong undergraduate population.

This is a pioneering programme for both for Dyson and the education sector and will dovetail with the James Dyson Foundation’s school engagement initiatives to ensure that we attract and recruit the best school leavers in the UK.
Our first cohort of undergraduates are enrolled on a four-year Bachelor of Engineering Degree written by leading Dyson engineers in collaboration with the University of Warwick. Our cohort have the rare opportunity to blend study and ‘on the job’ learning working alongside some of the best engineers and scientists in the world.
- Work with University of Warwick to manage student performance on the degree programme. Co-ordinate exams and assessment of undergraduate work.
- Support undergraduates with technical problems they may encounter on their course or within their roles.
- Understand the degree content in order to support the undergraduate’s learning.
- Identify and support individual learning needs based on academic performance.
- Lead seminars and tutorial sessions to full cohort and smaller groups.
- Maintain close link with lecturers to feedback on areas that have not been well understood by the cohort.
- A good first degree or Masters in Mechanical Engineering or Electronic Engineering (other relevant engineering disciplines will be considered).
- Good analytical ability and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format.
- Experience of teaching or lecturing, ideally in Higher Education.
- Experience of applying engineering fundamentals to develop products.
