Job overview

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational Access Teacher from April or September 2021.

We welcome applications from NQTs and primary teachers.

Hours: 32.5 hours per week

Salary: Teacher Mainscale/UPS      SEN allowance

Peacehaven Community School (PCS) is a proudly comprehensive school. This means diverse teaching opportunities, from supporting SEN students with complex needs, some of whom may also be gifted and talented, to working with learners who are new to English.

PCS is a Swale Academies Trust (SAT) School who welcomes applications from teachers who want to develop their careers and explore the opportunities that working within an established academy trust can bring. SAT has a proud history of supporting non-selective schools to out-perform grammar schools in Kent. Here in East Sussex, the Trust is applying those same principles to areas where students have not had the advantages given to their peers in more affluent areas.

We believe in developing the capacity of our staff and the successful candidate will be given the opportunity to participate in CPD that will enhance knowledge and support growth.

We are committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and young people. To help protect the children in our care, the successful applicants will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check. Any post offered will be conditional on us obtaining two good references for you. We are unable to accept CVs as applications and will only consider candidates who complete the application form provided.

This is your opportunity to join our inspirational and forward-thinking team, making a significant and measurable difference in improving the educational attainment of the children and young people in this inclusive community.  Life at PCS, our vibrant school on the south coast near Brighton, does not stand still and we constantly seek innovative ways to improve standards.

The Role

The successful candidate will join a team of Access teachers who have experience of working in primary, secondary and special schools.  The Access Team are part of the Learning Support and Development Faculty who support students in meeting target outcomes.

Students in the Access classes enter their secondary education working at levels 3 and below and experience barriers to learning. They have a range of special education needs including language and literacy difficulties, Asperger’s Syndrome and physical disabilities. The school has a Special Facility for students with speech, language and communication difficulties, the majority of whom are taught in Access classes.

Ethos & Values

Peacehaven Community School offers high quality inclusive teaching and learning.  The Learning Support and Development Faculty plays a leading role in ensuring that all our students have full access to the curriculum and those students from vulnerable groups make good progress across the curriculum and good progress towards expected outcomes.

Teachers and support staff in the Faculty are committed to knowing their students as individuals and meeting their needs through a personalised range of support.

All staff contribute to the development of policy and practice through a process of ongoing reflection and evaluation.

Teaching and Learning

Access teachers are teachers of English, Maths and Humanities. They follow the schemes of work developed by each Faculty and contribute to the planning, evaluating and development of this curriculum. In addition, teachers further differentiate this curriculum to meet the needs of the students that they work with.  Teachers in the Access team also teach English and Maths GCSE and Entry Level courses, PSHE and ASDAN life skills courses. The Faculty runs daily Independent Study support sessions and staff are involved in a range of extra-curricular activities.

Teachers need to develop excellent relationships with students in their classes and with their parents and carers.  They need to manage the effective deployment of Learning Support Assistants and volunteers and to work together with specialist teachers and other professionals to reduce the barriers to learning experienced by their students. Year 7 teachers will also liaise with Primary Schools regarding students who will join their classes.

Our Recruitment Pack, which includes the job description & person specification, and application forms are all available from http://www.phcs.org.uk/school/vacancies.

Peacehaven Community School (PCS) is a proudly comprehensive school. This means diverse teaching opportunities, from supporting SEN students with complex needs - some of whom may also be gifted and talented and studying in our Baccalaureate stream – to working with learners who are new to English. Our approach to each child is the same; we want to support them to achieve their dreams. We don’t believe in barriers and we don’t believe in labels; we believe in hard work and high aspirations. If you are ambitious for yourself and for the students you teach, we would like to meet you.

PCS is a school that knows what it is: a place of learning.
