Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to give additional support to our students at this critical time in their education.  Government funding through the 16-19 Tuition Fund has been provided to FE Colleges to support students in this academic year who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns.

Achievement Boost Mentor – Variable Hours

Teaching & Learning Department

£12.31 per hour

Are you looking for a job which is both interesting and worthwhile? Do you want to make a difference and contribute to transforming lives? Have you got the skills to help our students achieve?

We are looking for enthusiastic, dedicated candidates for several positions as Achievement BOOST Mentors at Barnsley College.  We know our students have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, yet we cannot allow this to mean that our young people of Barnsley are disadvantaged, and doors are closed to them. As an Achievement BOOST Mentor, you would play a vital role in supporting our students’ achievement in their main qualifications and contributing to them progressing to university, employment and promising futures.

The successful candidates will work with small groups of students, no more than five, to help them discover what they need in order to achieve and develop their skills and attitudes to be successful.  You will help them identify their needs and set targets, then work with them to make progress on these targets to help them achieve their qualifications, supported by our Curriculum Teams.  Each Achievement Mentor will work with one or two Curriculum Departments – this will likely be different to your subject specialism, and you will support the students’ learning and progress, communicating with Curriculum colleagues on subject-specific matters.  Where possible, we will match subject specialisms.  You should be competent and confident in the skills needed to be a successful student, be able to quickly build rapport with students, use a variety of assessment techniques and keep accurate records of attendance and progress.

The role is variable hours, and a range of hours is available, up to full-time, Monday to Friday. These appointments are funded through the 16-19 Tuition Fund provided to FE Colleges by the Department for Education to support students in this academic year who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns.

If you have the drive, skills, abilities and qualities to make a real difference then we would like to hear from you.

The closing date for applications is Monday 3 January 2022
