PURPOSE

To work in the Safeguarding, Welfare and Pastoral Team supporting the retention, attendance and academic achievement of care experienced learners and those on threshold of care to improve outcomes and overcome barriers to participating in education.


DUTIES

To closely monitor attendance of identified cohort, actively and timely following up on absence to action to address.

Make direct contact with parents/carers/guardians and keyworkers (especially Personal Advisers and social workers) to support attendance, including home visits.

Identify barriers and provide meaningful interventions and strategies to overcome these.

 Developing a positive and supportive connection with learners, create an atmosphere of trust and support, prioritising the safeguarding and wellbeing of all students.

To support SO/PWO on Personal Education Plans (PEP) for Cared for/Looked After Children ensuring all care experienced learners have an up-to-date, regularly reviewed PEP in partnership with Social Services, (especially Personal Advisers and social workers) including the attendance at LAC reviews

To provide Attendance and attainment information to Virtual Schools.

Liaise closely with curriculum staff to identify work missed during any absences and provide individual support and facilitation for learners to catch up on missed work.

Work with learners to set relevant targets for improvement of attendance and academic work missed and actively support learners to meet these targets.

Work closely with Safeguarding Officers and PWOs providing timely information and responding to requests.

Work with external and specialized services to provide support, advice and guidance e.g. Positive Steps to promote onward, high aspiration pathways that enable learners to reach their full potential in HE, employment, apprenticeships etc.

Identify engagement and enrichment opportunities for learners in cohort, supporting them to engage

Work with wider college support staff to provide opportunities for cohort, e.g. Social Prescriber, Counsellor and Engagement team

Support Designated Person for Cared for Children to develop and implement Learner Voice for Care Experience learners, gauge learner feedback and raise the profile of the cohort both within and without college.

Attend At Risk meetings with Curriculum staff to identify any concerns and feedback on actions.

Use college recording systems to record and report on the cohort including case study capture

Support the Transition Process from school to college including Summer Transition Projects.

Work closely with Retention and Improvement Team to utilize their systems and knowledge..

These posts are funded through the DfE’s new post 16 funding project and the College will be working closely with Rochdale Borough Council in overseeing, sharing our experiences and developing the work going forward.

Hopwood Hall College is a further education college located in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. The college was first established in 1992, and since its founding has seen extensive redevelopment and modernisation, including the installation of a brand-new technology centre in 2012 which provides facilities for studying motor vehicle maintenance, engineering and brickwork. Although the college had previously contained its own sixth form centre, since 2010 Hopwood Hall has concentrated solely on vocational qualifications for school leavers, along with its extensive adult-education programmes. The college occupies two main sites, located close by to each other in Greater Manchester, each providing a range of high-quality teaching facilities.

Values and Vision

Hopwood Hall College offers a huge range of subjects from entry-level courses up to foundation degrees, with part-time provision available for adult students looking to pursue their qualifications while working. In terms of younger students, Hopwood Hall begins accepting students at age 14, providing entry-level vocational qualifications and, potentially, apprenticeships for Key Stage 4 pupils looking to study outside of school. We have a purpose-built Salon, Restaurant and Technology Centre as well as extensive Sports and Animal Care facilities. Outside of study, the college also works hard to foster a sense of community among its students, playing host to a range of recreational common areas for students to relax and socialise.

“Leaders and senior managers have re-focused the college’s community learning provision. They have established good links with community groups to engage with learners who have not participated in education and training for some time. These learners benefit from the development of their essential English and mathematical skills, including English for speakers of other languages; they are progressing to further study and/or employment.”
