Job overview

Ref: R0002057
Permanent- Part-Time (0.8 FTE) & Full-Time Positions (x2)

We need a motivated and highly skilled teacher for children with visual impairment on a part time basis. This is a permanent post.

The teacher will work within a multi-disciplinary service of enthusiastic and successful advisory teachers supporting effective inclusion and equal opportunities. We are looking for a qualified teacher with experience in teaching children with visual impairment, or an interest in developing their skills in this area. Applicants that do not have the mandatory qualification but are undergoing and/or willing to undertake the training are invited to apply.

This advisory post involves working with pre-school children and their families, and pupils in both mainstream and special school settings including children with multiple disabilities. There is a close liaison with colleagues in Education, Health, Social Care and voluntary organisations. The London Borough of Hounslow has a primary visual impairment center catering for primary school aged children.

The ability to provide advice, support and training to schools, as well as undertake assessment using national guidelines and specific teaching support for individual children is essential. However, support would be given to teachers who did not yet have the specialist qualification for teaching children and young people with a visual impairment.

Candidates should have a sound understanding of the SEND Code of Practice: 0-25 with particular regard to children who are visually impaired, and be committed to upholding Quality Standards for Children and Young People with Visual Impairment. Good interpersonal and organisational skills are vital. SEN Specialist Support service (that includes Hearing Impairment and Physical Disabilities teams) is a well-established, highly valued central service.

Hounslow is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults and expects all staff to share this commitment.

We provide a comprehensive staff development programme.

Applicants should have a current driving licence, and have the use of a car, for which a mileage allowance is paid.

We would like the person appointed to start as soon as they are able.

If you would like an opportunity for an informal discussion about the post, please speak to the Head of Service: A. Gupta (020 8583 6334).
