Denmark and the Ikast-Brande Municipality

Denmark is often referred to as the world’s happiest country, famous for the concept of hygge (‘cosiness and conviviality’) and the strength of its social democracy. Denmark is an open and friendly country with an excellent reputation for safety, a clean environment, and progressive thinking. A healthy work-life balance is important in Danish culture, and Danes enjoy outdoor activities in their free time: hiking and camping, cycling, sailing, watersports, and enjoying the sandy beaches along the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts. There are over 400 islands in the Danish archipelago, and the country is rich in forests, lakes, and beautiful historic towns to explore.

Ikast is located in the centre of the country and enjoys excellent transport links by road and rail across Denmark. The attractive town of Herning is ten minutes’ drive away; the ‘Danish Lake District’ around Silkeborg is within 30 minutes’ drive; North Sea beaches can be reached in an hour, and Germany in two hours. We also have easy access to nearby Billund airport with its many international connections across Europe and beyond. Midtjylland region is a beautiful and dynamic area, famous for its independent spirit and ‘can-do’ attitude, epitomized by the sporting success of Herning-based FC Midtjylland. The Ikast-Brande Municipality is the heartland of the Danish textile industry and has attracted leading multinational companies such as Siemens and Bestseller.

The communities of Ikast and Herning are ideal both for families and single teachers. There are many international forums and groups to help newcomers settle and meet people. Danes generally speak excellent English, and Danish is a fun language to learn.
