Job overview

We are currently looking to appoint an Art Instructor to support the teaching of Art at Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form.

Ideally, our successful candidate will have an understanding of vocational courses at Level 2 and 3, along with a desire to contribute across Key Stages 4 and 5. There are opportunities for the candidate to take on additional responsibility in pastoral provision and enrichment.

The appointed candidate will be working with curriculum leaders in a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching and should have a desire to add value to the departments, along with helping to develop and guide the young people we teach.

About Us

Our art department delivers Cambridge Nationals L2 in Enterprise and Marketing, Creative iMedia, Science, Health & Social Care, P.E., and Cambridge Technical Extended Diplomas L3 in Art, Business, Health & Social Care, Science and Media.

We are a dynamic department who aspire for strong subject knowledge and the ability to invest in the future of our school community and to help develop students in becoming valued and respected members of society. We are in a unique position to broaden the curriculum in the near future to provide a wide range of courses and curriculum for students by providing them with choices for further education and employment.

Main Areas of Responsibility

As Art Instructor, your responsibilities may include:

  • Meeting on a regular basis with Art & Design Lead to coordinate lessons with Cambridge Technical Extended Diplomas in L3 Art classes.
  • Operational and strategic planning (including lesson planning, developing resources and syllabuses, and contributing to the departmental plan)
  • Curriculum planning
  • Staff development (including continuing professional development and engaging fully in the Performance Management Review process)
  • Quality assurance (including contributing to the process of monitoring and evaluating the subject area)
  • Management of information (including maintaining appropriate records and tracking student progress)
  • Communications with students, parents and other stakeholders
  • Pastoral system (including being a form tutor to a selected group of students)
  • Teaching, ensuring a high-quality learning experience for students

Qualifications & Experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • Two years' teaching experience (desirable)
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Fine Arts (desirable)
  • The ability to promote and cultivate positive personal interaction with students, teachers, and administrative staff
  • Strong knowledge of various art forms and have excellent artistic, research, and organizational skills
  • The ability to multi-task; be productive, focused, and flexible in a creative environment
  • The ability to interact and communicate effectively with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • A pleasant and professional manner
  • The ability to work independently with minimal oversight

Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form is opening in September 2018 and will provide an outstanding vocational education and preparation for skills based work or transition to university for students in Croydon and those from surrounding boroughs. This new academy with up to date, state of the art facilities, will recruit students from across Croydon and the wider London area focusing on the hard skills that will be needed in an area undergoing considerable reconstruction and rejuvenation. By focusing from the outset on the goal of employability within a number of sectors, we have created a curriculum that challenges and inspires, creating well rounded students who have the drive and ambition to succeed in their chosen area of work with additional skill sets that put them above others competing for jobs in their chosen vocation.
