Job overview

The Post

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual who enjoys working with young people to join our ambitious and exciting Art Department. This post is suitable for candidates with relevant subject knowledge who are well organised, practical, creative and possess an interest in working in a school environment. Duties are based in the Art Department and include supporting students to develop their work, preparing practical lessons, ordering equipment and materials, carrying out administrative tasks and the general maintenance of the suite of Art rooms.

The Art Department

The Art Department consists of three experienced members of staff including the Head of Department. There is also a visiting ceramicist who comes in for one day a week for the first two terms of each academic year. The department has four well-equipped studios, a library/resources base and a versatile exhibition space. The department is based in the Peter Bennett Centre which is a building separate from the main school. We are looking for an excellent technician to support the wide range of work and tasks undertaken by the art team and all the girls who work and enjoy using the art facilities.

Art and Design is taught as a separate subject throughout the school. All girls take Art in their first two years where it becomes an option in their upper 4th year. Class sizes are small and GCSE and A level results are excellent with 100% achieving A to A* in 2018. Art and Design is a popular subject at Advanced level with some students going on to Higher Education in relevant fields of study. There are also several other courses which the department provides in Art Appreciation, Creative Textiles and Pottery for junior girls. The overall aim is to give students the best opportunities to develop practical skills, express their creativity and to facilitate an energetic, enjoyable and positive experience for all.

There are lunch time extra-curricular clubs and after school sessions along with visits from practising artists who give specialist and inspiring workshops. Visits to museums and galleries are undertaken; locally, in London and other major cities, as well as overseas residential trips designed to enable students to engage with and make links to the wider cultural contexts within which their emerging work is placed. Exhibitions in the department and displays of work around school also help to raise the profile of the girls’ work and motivate and inspire others.
