We are seeking to appoint a passionate and inspiring practitioner to join the English Department leadership team from September 2019. The successful candidate will work closely with the Curriculum Leader and alongside other TLR holders to raise the attainment and progress of students and develop the English department in response to key priorities. 

Applicants will:

  • Be passionate about teaching and encouraging students to foster a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom.
  • Have a proven record of excellent classroom practice. Be optimistic and committed to establishing high expectations and improved outcomes.
  • Value the importance of professional learning and be committed to developing their own leadership potential.
  • Be a team player, able to make significant contributions to the rapid development of the department and to assist the Curriculum Leader in managing the team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Taking full responsibility for the provision of agreed cohort/s; ensuring schemes of learning are in place, reporting on student progress, identifying actions and evaluating impact.
  • Leading on KS3 interventions and supporting KS4 provision.
  • Developing Quality First Teaching in liaison with the Curriculum Leader. 
  • Assuming the role of ‘Close the Gap’ department champion; sharing effective practice and evidence-based research with regards to specific cohorts including the most able, disadvantaged and students with SEN through liaison with the SENCo.
  • Leading on parental engagement strategies and provision through liaison with the Language for Learning Co-ordinator.
  • Line managing other TLR holders within the department where appropriate
  • Deputising for the Curriculum Leader in their absence.
  • In the interests of effective practice, these key responsibilities may be reviewed to reflect changing needs and circumstances. Any consequential changes would be carried out in consultation with the post holder.

The successful candidate will assist the Curriculum Leader in: 

  • Raising standards of attainment and progress within the department.
  • Ensuring the delivery of an appropriate, comprehensive, differentiated, high-quality and cost-effective curriculum.
  • Managing the department on a daily basis; effectively deploying staff and financial and physical resources.
  • Developing the team, enhancing pedagogy and supporting the collaborative ethos.
  • Monitoring and implementing systems, policies and procedures within the department.
  • Inducting new staff (NQT/PGCE) and mentoring colleagues as appropriate.
