Job overview

The school requires an innovative and talented leader to support in leading the PE Team towards a refreshed vision which promises to engage all students in physical activity and promote habits, which will support our students in having great lifelong physical and mental health.

The Buckingham School is a rapidly growing school. Its reputation has grown too, both as a place for students to thrive, and as a great place to work. As the school has grown, the governing board has reiterated its vision of “Success for All”, in the community’s school.

Though results in PE continue to be strong in both Level 2 and 3 qualifications, the school hopes to see a regrowth in the numbers of students opting for the subject. The successful candidate will support the Curriculum Leader in reaching short, medium and long term plans to shape the school’s approach, resources and facilities.

Please note that the school has recently made the decision to cease the claim of “Specialist Sports College” status. The feeling is that the school has an exciting and dynamic reputation growing, and there is far more to celebrate in our community, especially when funding ceased so long ago. This will be reflected in the school’s branding in due course. Further, to ensure that our own students are the first beneficiaries of our staff and facilities, we have also stopped running a School Sports Partnership this summer. These decisions have resulted in the need to restructure the team and, recently, a newly appointed Curriculum Leader.

The successful candidate will help raise standards of student engagement, monitor and support student progress, and hold high expectations of themselves, the team and their students. Working alongside our Curriculum Leader the ideal candidate will have the skills and abilities to engage and enthuse different types of learners and to work productively as part of a highly committed and innovative team. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach PE at all levels, including KS5, and have experience of facilitating and leading extra-curricular activities and sporting events. Further, the Assistant Curriculum Leader of PE will support the Curriculum Leader with fundraising opportunities, including via the local community and grant applications. A willingness to play a part in the wider life of the school would be expected.

This role is not suitable for Early Career Teachers (ECTs).

The ideal candidate will:

  • have excellent subject knowledge
  • achieve outstanding student attainment outcomes
  • possess the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our

              students.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

  • teach in a strong, dynamic team of teachers
  • work collaboratively with other curriculum leaders across the school
  • lead on the design and development of the PE curriculum

In return, we will offer you:

• a professional, supportive and experienced Team

• a personalised approach to Continuing Professional Development

• a role in a school that has a clear vision

• the opportunity to work with students who possess excellent attitudes to learning

• a learning environment that is ambitious, collaborative and forward-thinking

Learning and progress are vital to our values. We promote a vibrant, exciting learning environment for everyone, encompassing flexible skill development, technological capability, skilful communication, and entrepreneurship, as well as providing breadth of knowledge, creativity, and sporting opportunities, both within and beyond the classroom, for all learners.

Ofsted report

“Sixth-form learners’ achievement has improved because teaching is better in practically all subjects. Learners are very good role models for younger pupils and contribute much to school life. Pastoral care, especially in Year 7 and for those who have special educational needs or disability, is very supportive. Practically all pupils enjoy school and behave well. They all feel safe. The school prepares pupils very well for their future health and safety. Career advice is good. Pupils successfully learn about spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues blended with an understanding of citizenship and British values. In many lessons, pupils work extremely hard and are totally absorbed by high-quality and challenging teaching.”
