The Role:

This is a business-critical role, within Hampshire County Council’s Children’s Services Directorate, which comes with a far reaching, energising and challenging remit.

Working closely with senior colleagues to collectively lead the Directorate, you will be responsible for working with school leaders and education providers to ensure that every child in Hampshire receives the best possible education provision and are supported to attain highly. This role is essential to the Directorate’s ability to deliver high quality children’s services, leading to positive outcomes for children and young people in Hampshire.  Under our current strategic partnership with the Isle of Wight Council the post holder will have responsibility for education and inclusion across both Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

This will include working with directorate colleagues in children’s social care and other partners to continuously improve outcomes for children experiencing vulnerability, driving improved outcomes for all and delivering our statutory duties for children with special educational needs. You will provide strategic leadership for the school system in Hampshire, managing relationships and developing partnership with school leaders, politicians and other relevant stake holders and giving strategic leadership to a range of related services including a range of services that are marketed to schools.

We have a strong reputation as a top performing Children’s Services Authority graded as Outstanding across the board by Ofsted. Over 93% of Hampshire schools are rated good or outstanding; and pupils at Hampshire schools continually outperform their peers both regionally and nationally.

Our ideal candidate will have significant senior leadership experience within education settings and a clear understanding of the strategic landscape for education provision and the opportunities and challenges for Local Authorities. A proven track record in leading and decision making that generates successful outcomes for children is essential.

Hampshire is the third largest shire county in England which means that our Children’s Services Department provides support to over 500 schools, educating around 180,000 pupils and looks after more than 1,700 children and young people in care, so the scale of the task is substantial.

This is an exciting time to be joining us as we continue our transformation journey with an unwavering focus on delivering the best education for every child in Hampshire.

Your part in our success

To be successful, and to achieve our aims, we require a highly motivated senior manager with a proven track record of delivery.

You will be ambitious, capable of leading and developing a multi-layered team with the insight to know how to inspire and delegate, but equally able to take a more ‘hands on’ approach where necessary. Possessing strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to persuade and influence at a strategic level, you will need to maintain the confidence and trust of the Director of Children’s Services, the Directorate Management Team, Corporate and political leaders in the council and external partners. The ability to lead change at a senior level will be key to your success.
