Job overview

Queen’s College Taunton is one of the leading independent boarding schools based in the south-west of the country, educating approximately 780 boys and girls from age 0 to 18.

This exciting opportunity within Queen’s College is for an excellent teacher of English and Drama who wishes to continue to teach across both subject areas (approximately half their lessons with each department). They would contribute to both departments as a member of the department, but also as Assistant Director of Drama they would take responsibility for the administration of the GCSE and A-Level exams within the Drama department.

The successful candidate will be a passionate, confident and successful teacher of English Language and Literature to at least GCSE level and of Drama to A-Level. Ideally they would have knowledge of the new GCSE English specifications.

Our English department is a well organised department of highly experienced, enthusiastic individuals who share a common love of written and spoken English. As a school we have recently introduced the accelerated reader programme to cement reading as a vital skill to education. At GCSE we follow the AQA specifications for both English and English Literature. English is taught in a suite of classrooms each equipped with the latest ICT technology. There is an extensive range of prose, poetry and drama specifically selected for each age group, including classic fiction and contemporary award-winning texts and reading.

The Drama department delivers a programme in Years 7, 8 and 9 to all pupils and then becomes a popular option at GCSE and A-level. We currently follow the EDUQAS syllabuses and achieve outstanding results. Although the academic course is geared towards the study of drama, the highlight for most drama pupils is still the practical work. A2 and AS productions and GCSE performances are of an extraordinarily high standard, with many pupils opting to be assessed for design elements including set, costume, lighting and sound, resulting in polished performances with very high production values.

Drama facilities are excellent. The Queen’s Hall Theatre seats 575 and is at the heart of the school. It is used throughout the year for College productions and a programme of visiting professional productions as well as numerous house concerts and revues. The Performing Arts Centre (PAC) seats 120 and is used for day-to-day dance and drama teaching and for smaller productions and presentations. The purpose–built Drama Studio is a black-box studio with raked seating for 75 and is the teaching space and venue for most of the GCSE and A-Level drama Performances.

Queen’s has enjoyed an enviable reputation for drama productions giving opportunities to pupils from all year groups. There are three major productions each year; The Senior Play/Musical in December, the Dance Show in February and The Middle School Play/Musical in May.

Accommodation may be available in a tutor’s flat in one of the boarding houses.

About Queen's College Taunton

Blending a proud tradition with ambitious plans for the future, Queen’s College is a thriving co-educational independent school located in Taunton, Somerset. The College comprises four schools: a Nursery, Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School incorporating a high-performing Sixth Form.

At every stage of our pupils’ time with us, our goal is to support them to achieve their full potential. This commitment can be found deeply rooted in our teaching team, all of whom share a joined-up approach to each child’s personal educational journey.

Our school motto ‘non scholae sed vitae discimus’ – ‘we educate not just for school but for life’ - is as relevant today as it was when the school was founded in 1843. Academic results are clearly important, but are only part of a truly all-round education. High quality learning is at the core of our academic success. Teaching is innovative, imaginative and focused on inspiring intellectual curiosity. The needs of each individual can be catered for in small classes and every pupil is made to feel special.

We aim to make Queen’s a centre of excellence for thinking and creativity which provides a bespoke, individualised education, designed to meet the needs of every member of the community, irrespective of pastoral or learning needs. Mutual respect and positive attitudes allow children to take informed risks, make mistakes and learn how to learn within an encouraging and empowering atmosphere.

As an inspirational teacher who shares our values and vision, we would invite you to consider joining our team. You can look forward to all the support you need to achieve your professional aspirations, as well as the chance to be part of a friendly, welcoming and collaborative culture within which we all work together to achieve ambitious goals.

It is also your opportunity to help us develop thoughtful, confident and resilient young people who are able to take their place as leaders of society in the future, with the spiritual and moral fibre needed to do the right thing and the flexibility of mind to meet the challenges they will face in today’s rapidly changing world.
