Applications are invited for the full-time maternity cover post of Assistant Director of Music at Surbiton High School, a selective (HMC, GSA), highly over-subscribed, independent sector school in Kingston-upon-Thames.

The candidate would join a large and successful music department which prepares pupils to perform music at over sixty School events each academic year, and within which over four-hundred music lessons take place each week.

The Assistant Director of Music works closely with the Director of Music and plays a key role in leadership and strategic planning of the department, which comprises nine full-time members of staff and over twenty-five visiting staff members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To be responsible for the teaching, learning and academic progress of pupils in Years 7 to 13 in curricular music lessons. This includes the teaching of all components within GCSE and A-level Music
  • To be responsible for managing and monitoring the KS3 curricular teaching, student progress and student attainment, under the guidance of the Director of Music
  • To provide teaching staff with feedback on lesson observation and the quality of marking and progress made by their students, under the guidance of the Director of Music.  This information, alongside the monitoring of co-curricular contributions by teaching staff, will be used to inform the completion of the yearly appraisals which are completed by the Director of Music
  • To be responsible for compiling and updating key documents for the teaching, assessment and promotion of curricular music, including but not exclusively: Departmental schemes of work, a coursework recording and submission calendar, internal written exams and tests, exam entry sheets, mark sheets for recording and tracking pupil performance in internal assessments, and information for pupils and parents about the music curriculum
  • To be responsible for allocating classes and teaching rooms to Department staff
  • To represent the Music Department at Parents’ Evenings and other external events
  • To be responsible for purchasing and maintaining the equipment and textbooks used in the music classrooms for curricular teaching, and for planning future spending on classroom equipment by contributing to the



The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:


  • Good Honours degree
  • A postgraduate teaching qualification (QTS would be an advantage)
  • Evidence of further relevant professional development
  • Good keyboard skills, suitable for accompanying GCSE and A-Level performance coursework, would be desirable
  • The ability to lead, inspire, motivate and support pupils and colleagues
  • Excellent organizational, administrative and ICT skills
  • A proven track record of delivering on academic performance
  • Evidence of successful, inspiring and innovative teaching at all levels
  • Experience of collaborating with colleagues (previous experience of managing colleagues would be an advantage)
  • Up-to-date knowledge of successful and innovative teaching and the latest curriculum developments and initiatives
  • High levels of personal and professional integrity
