Job Purpose: Assisting the Director of Sixth Form with providing strategic leadership of the Sixth Form

Reporting Line: Assistant Principal - Director of Sixth Form

Key Responsibilities:

  • To deputise for the Director of Sixth Form in their absence.
  • To assist the Director of Sixth Form in promoting the Sixth Form to meet the School’s aim of becoming the first choice school in South West London.
  • To promote an ethos of student well-being and high standards of academic progress, attendance, punctuality and dress.
  • To keep up-to-date with national developments in the curriculum, post-18 education, employment markets, pastoral care, personal development, progress tracking and teaching practice and methodology.
  • To lead the effective tracking of students’ progress across the Sixth Form. The tracking information should be available to SLT, Director of Sixth Form, Head of Year 12/13, HoD, tutors and other interested parties to allow early supportive intervention or the celebration of success. This tracking will require the understanding and tactical use of predictive data e.g. ALIS.
  • Review GCSE and A Level results before their release and then provide in-school support for students with university admissions and A-Level choices (post-Results Day support).
  • Contribute to facilitating the UCAS programme for students in each academic year.
  • To line-manage and appraise the Sixth Form Academic Mentors and EPQ Co-ordinator.
  • To assist with monitoring, evaluating and reviewing standards of teaching and learning in the sixth form curriculum provision.
  • Involvement in the interviewing and selection of external student candidates to the Sixth Form.
  • You will also be expected to teach approximately 70% of a timetable.
  • Undertake other duties of an appropriate level and nature as and when requested by the Director of Sixth Form and the Principal
  • Monitor individual pupils’ academic and co-curricular achievements and progress, communicating concerns/achievements regarding individuals to parents, teachers, Form Tutors and where appropriate the SLT.
  • Responsible for the well-being of pupils in Year 12/13.
  • Oversee the work of the Form Tutors in the year group and facilitate regular meetings.
  • In Years 11/12, guide pupils through choosing their AS and A2 Programme and provide a programme of support in the transition from GCSE to A level.
  • Liaise with Form Tutors regarding the organisation, content, resourcing and delivery of PSHE.
  • Develop new well-being initiatives with the Director of Sixth Form and Vice Principal.
  • Participate in the recruitment and retention of pupils into the Sixth Form.
  • Participate in the planning and delivery of events to inform parents and pupils such as Parents’ Evenings, Options Evenings, Higher Education and Information Evenings.
  • Be available in school for A-level results days and as required to guide students through Clearing and Adjustment.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

  • Good Honours degree
  • A postgraduate teaching qualification (QTS desirable but not essential)
  • Evidence of further relevant professional development would be an advantage
  • The ability to lead, inspire, motivate and support pupils and colleagues
  • Have a vision for and the ability to translate the Surbiton High School strategy into reality
  • The ability to work in a leadership team in a successful and dynamic School
  • Excellent organizational, administrative and ICT skills
  • A proven track record of delivering on academic performance
  • Evidence of successful, inspiring and innovative teaching at all levels
  • Experience of leading and collaborating with colleagues
  • Up-to-date knowledge of successful and innovative teaching and the latest curriculum developments and initiatives
  • Positive rapport with pupils
  • High standards of personal presence and presentation and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate concisely and sensitively, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences
