Job overview

Wishmore Cross Academy, part of Academies Enterprise Trust (AET), is a residential special school in Chobham, Surrey, for boys aged 9 to 16 years who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. We can admit up to 80 boys and can offer up to 22 residential places (including extended days) on a flexible basis for up to 4 nights per week.

We provide a highly effective and individual package of education, care and pastoral support to young people who may have had only negative experiences of school. A safe, caring environment supported by high levels of staffing ensures each pupil has the opportunity to make progress and achieve their full potential. We are a good school with outstanding features and we invest, not only in our students, but also our staff by providing regular CPD opportunities. The Academy is situated within easy reach of the M25 and M3 and, although in Surrey, is very close to Berkshire and Hampshire.

We are looking for an Assistant Educational Psychologist to join the Academy team to support the Local Authority Educational Psychologist in developing person-centred, outcomes-focused planning for children and young people from 9-16 year olds as outlined in the job description. The post is a fixed term contract until July 2018.

The successful candidate will have an honours degree in psychology recognised by the British Psychology Society and ideally have experience working with children in an educational setting.

All applicants are encouraged to visit the Academy prior to making an application.

As the sponsor, AET believes that all young people deserve to become world-class learners – to learn, enjoy, succeed and thrive in a first rate educational environment with the best facilities, the best teaching and the most up-to-date resources available to them. In each of our academies, you will benefit from visionary, inspirational and dynamic leadership and be empowered to develop your own skills with access to world-class CPD and Talent Management programmes. You will also be entitled to the following benefits: a health cash plan, vehicle affinity scheme, childcare vouchers and Westfield rewards.

In line with our safeguarding practices we are unable to accept CV's. For further information on this position and to make an application please visit: https://www.hirewire.co.uk/SG/1058184/MS_JobDetails.aspx?JobID=76845

Closing date: Wednesday 24 May 2017

Wishmore Cross is a Special Academy for up to 82 boys (with 80 currently on roll) aged 7 to 16 who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. We provide a highly effective and individual package of education, care and pastoral support to young people who may have had only negative experiences of school. A safe, caring environment supported by high levels of staffing ensures that each pupil has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Based in Chobham, located close to both the M3 and M25 Motorways in the north-west corner of Surrey, the Academy draws pupils from a range of backgrounds, both urban and rural, across Surrey and also neighbouring LEAs.

We're an Academy with a big heart. Staff work closely as a team and pride themselves on never giving up on a pupil. This is, however, a challenging environment where resilience and a deep commitment to supporting young people with Special Educational Needs are paramount.

OFSTED

The Academy is currently under the leadership of the Executive Headteacher, Gareth Howells and Ricardo Hylton, Head of School, who both bring a wealth of experience of SEMH and leadership with them.  Since the school moved under their leadership, it is thriving despite the challenges that Covid-19 has brought to the education sector.  The OFSTED inspection in late September 2018 judged the Academy as ‘Requires Improvement’ but highlighted many strengths.  The staff team are working hard to secure the phased changes required whilst maintaining our child-centred approach to learning.

We are committed to reducing restrictive physical intervention and this helps to create an ethos where physical aggression is rare. We also make use of restorative justice and this is successfully helping pupils to develop self-control, a sense of empathy and an understanding of right and wrong. As a result, over their time in the Academy, pupils develop more tolerant and inclusive values.
