Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity to join our forward thinking, dynamic Senior Leadership Team at Senior School Voorschoten (SSV) as an Assistant Headteacher.

The school:

The Senior School Voorschoten is a large, modern and very well equipped campus in Voorschoten, between the Hague and Leiden with excellent public transport, motorway and bicycle connections to the surrounding areas (10 minutes by train to the centre of the Hague).

This is an exciting time to join one of the oldest British International schools in Europe as we continue to cement our reputation both locally and globally. We largely follow the British National Curriculum at KS3 and KS4 and offer multiple post-16 academic pathways (including IB, A-Level and BTEC) serving nearly 900 students of 80 different nationalities. Our student body is motivated to succeed, our families are hugely supportive and our colleagues are welcoming, innovative and of the highest calibre. Our students’ destinations vary greatly, including Oxford, Cambridge and LSE as well as the leading Universities in the Netherlands and globally.

The role:

Our Senior Leadership team currently consists of the Headteacher, two Deputy Headteachers and four Assistant Headteachers. The specific roles and responsibilities of the position will be determined upon appointment, and we will consider applicants both from curriculum and pastoral leadership backgrounds. You may already be a senior leader, or you may be looking for your first promoted post from a middle leadership background.

What we are looking for is someone with drive and ambition, who has successful experience of leading and managing change and can demonstrate highly effective leadership, including school initiatives with measurable impact. You will be able to demonstrate characteristics of outstanding teaching; with excellent communication skills and a motivating presence with staff, students and parents. You can display a range of personal characteristics such as warmth, patience, empathy, humility and resilience, and can inspire respect and commitment, able to generate buy-in to initiatives.

The successful candidate should have:

• experience of middle leadership in a department, year group or whole school role, with demonstrable impact on leading people

• an ability to develop skills in staff

• excellent levels of communication with all stakeholders

• a record of delivering consistently high-quality lessons

• energy, creativity and a spirit of innovation

• strong inter-personal skills

• a passion for working in education and with young people

• a commitment to supporting and promoting safeguarding, student welfare, equality and diversity.

Life in The Netherlands:

The Netherlands is one of the most welcoming of all EU member countries to professionals working abroad and is a very pleasant country in which to live and work. The Netherlands regularly tops surveys on child wellbeing.

The working language of The BSN is English. The Dutch are excellent linguists and English is widely spoken by around 70% of the population.

Transport services and connections are excellent - our campuses are located in The Hague, just 30 or so minutes from Amsterdam Schiphol airport, or in the other direction, from the Hoek of Holland ferry terminal. Public transport is fast, reliable and generally good value for money, but many choose the truly Dutch option of cycling, making good use of the highly developed network of cycle paths.

There is much more you can find out about the school and living in The Netherlands from our website - www.britishschool.nl

Application process:

Applications should include a CV and letter of application (no longer than two sides of A4), addressed to Patrick Heuff, Headteacher, explaining your interest in the post and how your experience and personal attributes will be a good match for the role.

Position start date: August 2023

The closing date for applications: Monday 13 February 2023 at 1600 CEST.

First Interview: If your application is successful you may be invited to an initial online video interview.
