We're looking for an Assistant Headteacher to join our team at Westbourne School, a special educational needs school in Sutton-in-Ashfield. As Assistant Headteacher, you will oversee Behaviours and Attitudes in line with school and regulatory expectations and support the growth of a nurturing and therapeutic environment to meet a range of needs including social, emotional, mental health, communication and learning difficulties and ASC. You will be an outstanding educationalist and want to ensure the school is leading light for our young people and their families.

Westbourne School caters for children aged 11-18 and aims to grow to 49 pupils.  You will be responsible for planning and delivering various subjects across the curriculum. Differentiation and individualised learning strategies are vital skills required to meet the needs of all our pupils who will have had varying degrees of success in their educational lives.

About the Role

The Assistant Headteacher will ensure there is a positive ethos which reflects the school’s commitment to education including the encouragement of all staff and pupils to participate fully in all aspects of school life. This essential role ensures that the school is constantly reviewing its behavioural policies and procedures, identifying trends and patterns and being adaptive to individual needs of pupils.

At a strategic level, you will be responsible for monitoring and tracking all behavioural and attendance data, providing weekly and half termly reports, the creation of action plans and the implementation of initiatives to show constant improvement in all areas. In support of this, you will also monitor exclusions and provide analysis. Operationally, you will line manage and organise the pastoral team as well communicate whole school pastoral expectations, ensuring a positive environment and excellent behaviour for learning across the curriculum. You will also organise the staff and pupil rota for unstructured times and oversee extra-curricular activities during these times, monitoring impact and reviewing half termly.

Who we are looking for?

We are looking for an individual who is educated to degree level or equivalent with Qualified Teacher Status. Experience of working with and managing children with sometimes challenging behaviour is essential.

We are looking for someone who knows how to bring a creative and innovative approach to improving performance and support for our pupils and their families. An excellent communicator, you will become an ambassador for Acorn Care and Education, as the role will include working in partnership with parents, local authorities and other stakeholders.

No two days at Westbourne School are the same, so we are looking for an Assistant Headteacher who has a flexible working approach and can use their initiative. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with young people in a calm demeanour and focuses on the positive outcomes of our young people.

Essential criteria:

  • A degree or degree level equivalent qualification
  • Qualified Teacher Status
  • Experience of working with children with learning disabilities
  • Current full driving licence
  • A commitment to promoting the safeguarding and well-being of children and young people
  • Experience of Leadership and management across a whole school setting
  • Extensive experience of curriculum design, implementation, and quality assurance processes
