Job overview

We want to appoint a dedicated, committed and inspiring Assistant Headteacher to direct Literacy and Oracy throughout our 11-16 Academy, to lead, implement and quality assure the whole-school strategy for literacy at St Anne’s Academy, and to develop a culture where literacy is central to the Academy’s ethos and valued by all as critical to our success.

At St. Anne’s Church of England Academy, many of our pupils have both a language gap and a social interaction gap which have been exacerbated by Covid-19 and lockdowns and we are committed to ensuring that no student remains limited in their academic qualifications as a result of their literacy skills: we are seeking a lead practitioner who shares in this passion. Our ideal candidate is an educational  leader who understands and has the drive and commitment to research, audit, plan, implement, manage and embed a sustainable whole-school literacy strategy from Y6-7 transition through to GCSE, and from intervention to disciplinary literacy. We want all our staff to be knowledgeable, empowered, and able to ensure that pupils can progress and succeed.

The person we appoint will be a middle leader with a strong track record of improvement and raising achievement, both in their own area of responsibility and as part of a whole-school improvement priority, who understands and has wrestled (with success) with the challenge of literacy in their own discipline. We need someone who can build and exemplify a culture of high challenge and high support, ensuring both the scope for informed professional creativity as well as accountability.

The Cranmer Education Trust is also developing its own CPD arm in the Cranmer Institute which will provide professional training and development for our own staff, and provide school to school support through Specialist Leaders of Education. Our ambition is that all our leaders, including the new Director of Literacy  at St Anne’s, will become SLEs who can develop professionally and add value in a wider, connected professional network. The post-holder will guide our collective knowledge and understanding of the fundamental role of literacy in curriculum, pedagogy, and pupils’ confidence and self-efficacy across the diverse communities served by our Trust schools.

St Anne’s CE Academy is located in Middleton, Greater Manchester, and easily commutable from most of the cities and towns in the North West via the M60, M62, M6 and M56.

We offer:

  • an excellent environment for developing teaching and learning, with spirited, friendly and ambitious students and talented, committed, highly professional staff,
  • very significant non-teaching time and resource availability – Literacy is our priority
  • full membership of our Senior Leadership Team in our ambitious and improving school, part of a Trust (www.cranmereducationtrust.com), with its own initial teacher training arm (www.manchesternexus.com) and which leads the East Manchester Teaching School Hub (www.eastmanchesterteaching hub.com), all of which offers huge potential for the right person to gain a range of leadership experience and progress rapidly in their own professional development.

For a full pack including application forms please visit www.stannesliteracy.co.uk or e-mail our advisers A SDTi on gm@asdti.com or telephone ASDTi on 07736 775776 – they are available evenings and weekends as well as during the working day, to help you make the right choice.

Closing date for applications:  28th January 2022 at 10am.

Interviews will be as soon as possible - probably the following week.

St Anne's is a secondary 11-16 school in Middleton, Rochdale. Joining the Trust in 2021, the school is on a rapid improvement trajectory with very exciting things to come being part of the Cranmer Community. The quality of education is the school's absolute priority and all staff are supported in being part of this through the new structured whole school and faculty led CPD offer which focuses on specific themes such as metacognition and how to use Rosenshine's principles. The school has made incredible progress with students' online learning and is trailblazing the use of Microsoft Teams, rapidly developing pedagogy so that students continue to be engaged at home as much as at school. The building is a new build with excellent facilities and grounds. The site is easily accessible in less than one mile from Junction 19 of the M62.

St Anne’s Academy Vision and Values

VISION

The best for everyone, the best from everyone. We have faith in our future.

Values

Aspiration I believe that having high aspirations can motivate me to work hard and achieve my goals without excuses. I have high expectations in everything I do.  Aspiration is valuable because it allows me to look beyond my current experiences and to understand, interpret and change the world for the better.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

Integrity I believe that living my life by high moral standards and values is important.  I understand how values are grounded in faith and biblical teaching. I commit to doing the right thing in all circumstances, even if this makes things more difficult for me and when no one is watching.  I take responsibility for myself and my community to help it improve for everyone.

“Whoever walks in integrity walks securely.” Proverbs 10:9a

Respect I believe that mutual respect is the most important element in a kind and cohesive community.  Respect, and self-respect, means that I take things seriously.  I care about myself and others and aim to do good as I go.  Respect is valuable because it allows me to understand the differences in our community and to know how to behave in the best interests of that community.

“Love your neighbour as you love yourself.” Matthew 22:39

Hard work I believe that through hard work I can overcome challenges as I meet them.  I am resilient and want to complete every task to the best of my ability.  Hard work is valuable because it enables me to be the best I can be and the best I am meant to be. It builds the foundation of experience and learning for my future.

“With God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26
