We are looking to recruit an Assistant Headteacher to help shape and lead a new independent special educational needs day school for 76 young people aged 7-18. We are developing a custom-built site with leading vocational facilities in the Wrens Nest National Nature Reserve close to Dudley. You will assist the Headteacher in leading and managing the school, as well as a nurturing and therapeutic environment to meet a range of needs including social, emotional, behavioural, communication and learning difficulties. Your school will be outstanding and a leading light for our young people and their families.

About the Role

We are looking to appoint a dynamic, passionate and committed Assistant Headteacher to join our new school Senior Leadership Team and to help formulate and manage the School Improvement Plan and the aims and objectives of the school.

The successful candidate will have experience of working with young people with a range of complex learning needs. You will be able to demonstrate a working understanding of how these needs impact upon learning and behaviour in the classroom. You may have specialist knowledge and experience of working with autistic spectrum disorder or children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Or you may have experience of working across both specialisms.

As Assistant Headteacher you will initially have a mixture of management and teaching responsibilities with a focus on achieving positive outcomes for young people. You will be expected to contribute to the organisation, management and supervision of school routines and curriculum. It is important to consider that the individual pupil’s learning and effective progression of achievement are provided through the development of the curriculum and policies of the school.

The key areas of additional responsibility that we are specifically looking for at this early stage of the School’s development include:

- SENCO/ASC Specialism

- Pastoral Care/Safeguarding Lead

- Teaching, Learning and Assessment

- Vocational Education/Post-16

We would welcome applications from individuals with specific experience in one or a number of the named areas above.

Who we are looking for?

We are looking to hear from dynamic and passionate individuals with experience of working with young people with a range of complex learning needs. We are looking for someone who knows how to bring a creative and innovative approach to improving performance and support for our pupils and their families.

An excellent communicator, you will act as an ambassador for The Wenlock School, and will have demonstrable experience of working in partnership with parents, local authorities and other stakeholders. If you are a highly motivated and forward-thinking manager, with the energy and passion to change lives coupled with proven of experience of improving learning outcomes through coaching and mentoring teachers, this could be an excellent opportunity for you.

In return for your experience and commitment we offer outstanding career opportunities, access to a network of great senior colleagues within the Acorn Care and Education Group and the chance to shape the future and ongoing development of the school. Please note that we do not offer Teachers' Pension Scheme at The Wenlock School.

Welcome to The Wenlock School

 The Wenlock School

The Wenlock School offers an outstanding and therapeutic educational approach with a staff team dedicated and determined to support every individual. Our custom built school has been designed with specialised facilities, creating a unique environment, which will help our learners re-engage with their education supported by a personalised and purposeful curriculum. We will also embrace a raft of initiatives with personalised targets to ensure every child can make excellent progress, appropriate to their specific needs.  Many children come to us with very complex needs, communication difficulties and associated challenging behaviour. We always look beyond the issues and potential barriers to learning and recognise the innate potential within. We invest time with each individual child to recognise and understand their learning needs so that we can put in place the right support package. Our expectations are very high for both behaviour and achievement, because we know that we can help children make much more progress than they would within a mainstream school environment
