Job overview

Assistant Heads play an essential part in the delivery of Victoria College’s strategic vision. As a member of the Leadership Group, they each have a discrete area of responsibility within the College that they are given ownership of which they are entrusted to lead, make key decisions on and take responsibility for the relevant policy areas.

We are delighted to offer a position on this team from September 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The role is ideal for a current middle or senior leader seeking to extend their impact at a whole school level, contribute to whole‑school leadership, and take the next step in their professional journey.

The allocation of responsibilities will be considered based on experience and interest of the successful candidate. Please note that Assistant Heads at Victoria College will periodically rotate those responsibilities, to facilitate professional development. The current key responsibilities within the Assistant Head team are as follows:

  • Curriculum, Teaching and Learning

  • Staffing and Operations

  • Supercurriculum

  • Sixth Form (Years 12-13)

  • Middle School (Years 9-11)

  • Lower School (Years 7-8)

An informal conversation with Gareth Hughes - Headteacher - is warmly welcomed ahead of an application. Please contact Katya Petty - Headteacher's PA - on htpa@vcj.sch.je to arrange this.

We are a successful boys’ day school of 730 students with 180 in the Sixth Form and a dedicated Preparatory School. Victoria College is a fee-paying Government of Jersey maintained school and a member of the Head's Conference (HMC). The campus is outstandingly beautiful, overlooking the capital town of St Helier. Our Victorian buildings, set within woodland and lawns are roomy, bright, and well-equipped. We have strong traditions dating back to 1852 and a long record of academic excellence.

Teach at an HMC school in beautiful Jersey – a 40-minute flight to the UK. As a Crown Dependency, our school does not charge VAT, and the island enjoys its own, very generous, Teacher Superannuation Fund (Pension Scheme).
