ASSISTANT HEADTEACHER

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (SENDCO)

Permanent, Full time

LEADERSHIP 12 - 17

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and inspiring special educational needs and disabilities co-ordinator to join our Senior Leadership Team. As a SENDCO, you will be an experienced teacher with a passion for supporting students with special educational needs. Working closely with senior colleagues, you will bring an innovative and creative approach to supporting the strategic direction and development of SEND provision across our school, whilst effectively managing and developing the progress and achievement of our students.

The successful candidate will also be the school lead for the exciting Enhanced School Provision that is being built on the school site by the Local Authority. While the ERP will be a separate educational facility we see it as an ideal opportunity for us to develop our inclusive approach and share good practice for continued professional training for both teaching and support staff.

Experience of teaching and supporting students with SEND is essential. Leadership and management experience within a school setting is important and evidence of working with or within other organisations that support SEND students would be beneficial.

As a newly appointed SENDCO you must be a qualified teacher and, where you have not previously been the SENDCO at that or any other relevant school for a total period of more than twelve months, you must achieve a National Award in Special Educational Needs Co-ordination within three years of appointment. The successful candidate must either have this qualification or commit to complete this course as this is statutory aspect of the role.

As a SENDCO, you will also be expected to:

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of the school's SEND policy and Accessibility Plan
  • Carry out assessments of pupils with SEND to identify needs and monitor progress - including observations in the classroom and meeting with teachers and parents
  • Work with classroom teachers, the school leadership team, parents and relevant external agencies to develop, implement and monitor individual support/learning plans
  • Provide regular updates on pupil progress through written reports and meetings with parents
  • Make referrals and liaise with professionals outside of the school - this could include psychologists, health and social care providers, speech and language therapists and occupational therapists
  • Provide advice, guidance and training to classroom teachers on supporting pupils with SEND
  • Support teachers to develop schemes of work and learning programmes for pupils with SEND
  • Support teachers to develop and implement effective teaching and behaviour management approaches in the classroom
  • Manage and advise on the school budget and resources for SEND provision
  • Develop and maintain systems for keeping pupil records, ensuring information is accurate and up to date
  • Analyse school, local and national data and develop appropriate strategies and interventions
  • Manage HLTA’s, teaching assistants and support staff to improve pupil progress and attainment
  • Keep up to date with national and local policies related to SEN and cascade information to colleagues.

National Research School

We are a designated an EEF/IEE Research School.  Huntington plays a crucial role in this DfE initiative and will provide colleagues with great professional development opportunities.

Research Schools aim to lead the way in the use of evidence-based practice. Through the network we share what they know about putting research into practice, and support schools in their region to make better use of evidence to inform their teaching and learning so that they really make a difference in the classroom.

Becoming a Research School is an exciting development that will help us to support teachers and school leaders in our region, and nationally, at a time of turmoil and increasingly challenging curricula and assessment. We see our role as providing support tools and training to better inform school improvement and improve student outcomes.

"The school has a well-thought-out professional development programme for staff, which is  supported effectively by the Research School. As a result, staff are experts in their subject  areas. The school ensures that staff are supported in their development and learning.  Staff apply relevant subject and pedagogical research. This benefits all pupils." - Ofsted Nov 2023
