As Assistant Headteacher, you will have responsibility for establishing the vision of the Sixth Form in line with the broad educational vision of the School. You will deliver the highest possible educational standards and create a high expectation culture in which students are academically challenged, provided with a myriad of cultural, sporting and enrichment opportunities all within a safe and caring environment. You will provide the leadership necessary to ensure staff are supported and are fully committed to their students achieving outstanding outcomes and progress.

About Us

BRGS is driven by the ambition to be the best. We believe exceptional leaders create exceptional schools; they transform lives and shape the future of every student.

We can trace our history back to Newchurch Grammar School founded in 1703. The core of their staff formed BRGS on our current site in 1913. With 100 years of serving families in Rossendale and beyond, we are proud of our heritage and celebrate our school's traditions but, alongside this, we seek to embrace positive change and innovation.

There is a unique ethos throughout BRGS which provides the foundation from which students make excellent progress. Lessons designed to stretch and inspire are a fundamental feature of school life, but this is only a small part of the story. BRGS delivers a range of experiences through which we develop all students into the well-rounded, confident and talented young adults that you will find here. We seek to provide the best education, give the students the greatest of opportunities and compete with the very best schools across the world.

About you

Dynamic, inspiring and highly effective, the successful candidate will match and surpass what has been achieved so far. Committed to creating an environment that promotes academic, creative, sporting, linguistic and personal achievement, you will be a highly successful school leader and will have made a significant positive contribution to a school/college, its leadership, student outcomes and ethos. In addition, excellent communication skills and confidence to develop rich partnerships with governors, families and the community will be essential. Above all, you will have the drive and determination to establish our Sixth Form as a centre of excellence for education.

BRGS encourages and welcomes candidates from all backgrounds to join our team.

If you match our ambition and want to join our dedicated team of professionals, we would love to hear from you. Candidates must address the person specification in no more than 1,000 words. Applications must be submitted via email to ajh@brgs.org.uk

The school

Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School (BRGS) is situated on a hillside overlooking the Rossendale Valley in the village of Waterfoot, between Rawtenstall and Bacup, but is easily accessible from Manchester, Preston and the Ribble Valley, and the Yorkshire Dales.  The school has an excellent reputation in the local area, drawing students from a wide catchment area, although its primary focus remains as a grammar school for the valley.

The history of the school can be traced back to Newchurch Grammar School founded in 1703.  The core of their staff formed BRGS on the current site in 1913.  We are proud of our heritage and celebrate our traditions, but alongside this, we seek to embrace positive change and innovation.  BRGS remains at the forefront of educational excellence for teaching and learning, promoting and cultivating an ever-increasing amount of innovative and outstanding practice.

In September 2023, the school joined Star Academies, one the country’s leading multi-academy trusts. As part of the Star family, BRGS collaborates with other Star schools to share expertise and maximise opportunities and experiences for our students.

Today, we can look back with pride upon the dedication of our staff and the achievements of our current and former students. We can look forward with confidence to our future, knowing that BRGS’ long-held qualities of dedication and academic excellence, along with our students’ consideration for one another and for the community at large, will be maintained and passed on to future generations of Rossendale children.
