Job overview

A highly capable senior leader is required from September 2022 to take on the role of Assistant Headteacher and to lead on the development of The Pavilion school. This is new provision which forms part of The Garden School and is on a separate, green site in a pleasant residential area in Upper Clapton, Hackney. 

The school will provide a specialist curriculum for Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 autistic students with learning difficulties. The focus is on preparation for adulthood with exciting work-related and other learning opportunities. The first cohort of students has already started to attend from February 2022.

The Governors are seeking to appoint a highly competent practitioner at The Pavilion who will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the school and who will lead on the development of the profile of the new provision with stakeholders and the wider community. 

The successful candidate will develop the curricular offer across the school and ensure high quality teaching and other necessary support is in place so that the best outcomes are achieved for each individual student.

He/she will join a dedicated and hard-working leadership team with high expectations and standards. 

This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with substantial experience of teaching older autistic students to further develop their leadership and management skills. This person will demonstrate a strong commitment to improving outcomes for this group of children and young people.

We are interested in hearing from candidates with experience of successful middle or senior leadership gained in special education who have

• Experience as an outstanding classroom practitioner for older students with autism and learning difficulties in a special educational setting.

• Recent proven experience of leading, motivating and inspiring individuals and teams in such a setting.

The successful candidate will have 

• A thorough knowledge and track record of leading the development and delivery of an outstanding curriculum for older secondary and/or post 16 autistic students with autism.

• The leadership, professionalism, inter-personal and communication skills to motivate and inspire class teachers and other staff.

• Experience of playing a role in the school improvement and school evaluation planning process.

• Experience of contributing to staff and pupils’ safety and welfare.

• Knowledge and experience of effective approaches to safeguarding and well-being.

• The proven ability to work collaboratively in a multi-professional team to secure successful outcomes for children and young people.
