Cheslyn Hay Sport and Community High School is a popular and over oversubscribed 11-18 specialist sports college with 1290 students on role. Situated in South Staffordshire and with easy access to M6, M6 toll and M54 motorways, the school is an ever improving school, with a strong reputation locally for enabling its young people to flourish and judged by Ofsted to be good in June 2015. 

The successful candidate will be an exceptionally talented and dynamic individual with a proven track record of excellence in the classroom and someone who can champion teaching and learning by modelling best practice. The post-holder should have a drive to lead, motivate and challenge staff to secure continual improvement across all areas of the school.  They should be able to communicate effectively, manage challenging situations and work well under pressure.  They should be aspirational for our students and relentless in their desire to improve standards. The key responsibilities will be determined by the strength and experience of the successful candidate.

Our school has developed three guiding principles:

“Make every lesson count, every day for every child”. We believe that outstanding means delivering 5 good lessons in the classroom every day but also the wider lessons that we teach the students through the ethos and climate of the school.

“Challenging destinies and re-writing narratives”, which fundamentally means raising the aspirations of all children to think wider and higher when considering the future.

“Unconditional positive regard for all”. Respect has been the cornerstone of the school since it opened. This phrase sums up our expectation that all people, lunchtime supervisors, visitors, every child should be shown unconditional respect. For teaching staff this is also about giving every child a fresh start, every lesson so they have the chance to achieve in every lesson.

This post will provide an excellent preparation for deputy headship and candidates should possess the vision and drive to support the Senior Leadership Team at this exciting time in the development of the school.

The successful candidate will have:

· Experience of middle leader self-evaluation and moving performance of individuals staff and/or students 

· A good understanding of data tracking and target setting at every level, every key stage

· A proven record of improving performance at student level

· An ability to narrow the gap for vulnerable students and between departments and Key Stages

· Good understanding of effective assessment, AfL and marking

· Experience in improving teaching and learning 

· A good understanding of the challenges facing students with DSEN, those receiving pupil premium funding and those in need of inclusion

· A passion for teaching and learning and ensuring every child fulfills their potential is essential. 

· An excellent record as a classroom practitioner. 

· Enthusiasm, energy and be self-motivated and resilient, being able to respond well to pressure 

· The ability to work well with all stakeholders and external partners.

Sports College Mission Statement
 

• Cheslyn Hay Academy is currently at the centre of local community sport as it forms part of
 a joint user agreement with South Staffordshire District Council and this will be developed through greater provision
 for Adult Education in courses related to Physical Education and Sport.
• The school currently has a thriving Physical Education department which produces high levels of attainment with all
 ages and all abilities. This will be further enhanced through the structured professional development of all staff.
• Through continually developing links with community partners, opportunities and provision for participation at all
 levels of Sport will be increased.
• All pupils will follow an accredited course in Physical Education and Sport, and this will be instrumental in
 encouraging students to pursue both careers in the subject and healthy lifestyles.
• At Cheslyn Hay we believe that all pupils should be able to access ICT and as such all pupils will utilise a wide
 range of technology related to Physical Education and Sport through the latest ‘virtual’ and interactive software.
• Pupils at Cheslyn Hay Academy will be encouraged to review their own progress and set
 themselves targets based on Individual Activity Plans. This will encourage the pupils to become independent
 learners with responsibility for their own progress.

Sports College Aims and Objectives

To raise standards of achievement in each specialist subject through the increased quality of teaching and learning.
• To implement a high-quality professional development programme enabling Physical Education to be used as a
 learning foundation subject.
• To enhance the school’s target setting by developing self-review, Individual Activity Plans and student peer
 mentoring to raise standards of achievement, motivation and self-esteem.

To extend curricular opportunities in the specialist subjects, including subject enrichment areas, out of hours
learning, industry/business links and the relationship between specialist subjects.

• To extend the quality and quantity of the Out of Hours Learning programme through the extension of the working day. • To develop the enhancement of pupils’ learning opportunities through the development of structured cross-
 curricular links.
• To develop the provision of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities via inclusion in curriculum and enrichment activities.

To increase take-up and interest in specialist subject courses, particularly post-16.

• To develop the existing provision for pupils to follow accredited courses in Physical Education and Sport ensuring
 all pupils leave Cheslyn Hay Academy with a recognised qualification.
• To increase participation and stimulate interest by the structuring of post-16 Physical Education to enhance Key
 Skills/Millennium Volunteers schemes.
