Job overview

St Mary’s Calne

St Mary’s Calne offers an academically enriching working environment within the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, with easy transport links to Bristol, Bath and London.

St Mary’s Calne is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistress’ Conference (HMC); it is a leader in the field of girls’ independent boarding education. It has around 360 girls aged 11-18, including 120+ girls in the Sixth Form. As well as innovative teaching, learning and scholarship, St Mary’s Calne offers outstanding pastoral care and a vibrant, warm community.

Ethos

St Mary’s Calne believes in excellence in all respects. As a school community, we thrive amidst a culture of strong expectations and the education which we provide nurtures and develops the concept of high performance. The principal aim is to develop well-rounded pupils who are equipped to excel as adults.

Co-curricular opportunities beyond the classroom are a vital and integral part of life for girls at St Mary’s Calne. These opportunities are woven into the timetable during the day, in the evenings and at weekends. We believe that both boarders and day girls benefit from all aspects of the strong boarding ethos of the school.

Opportunity

Starting September 2024 (or earlier if available), St Mary's has an opportunity for a full time Asistant Houseparent to work term time weeks in one of our fourth form boarding houses. This is a residential post with overnight duties and a full year salary is paid in return for longer term time hours. Periods of school holidays are not working weeks (unless in exceptional circumstances).

The role of Assistant Houseparent is a combination of administrative and pastoral duties, underpinning the School’s vision to provide outstanding care and support within a full boarding community. In addition to daytime duties, the residential Assistant Houseparent shares the overnight cover for the House with the Housemistress, working in support of the House Team to ensure every pupil is valued and well-cared for and that the Boarding House provides a well organised, safe and ambitious environment for pupils to grow and develop. This vacancy is available in one of our lower fourth form houses (ages 11-13). The successful candidate will be offered suitable accommodation within the boarding house.

Acting as 1/3 of the full weekly cover in house shared alongside the Deputy Houseparent and Houseparent (both teaching staff). Shifts include mainly days with evening activities and/or weekends on a rota basis throughout 35 term time weeks per year. Overnight duties are shared between the three main house staff, however the Assistant Houseparent will have a minimum of one 24 hour period, and one additional night off per week. During a full academic year, house staff enjoy 6 fixed exeat weekends off per year and all school holiday weeks can be treated as holidays (possibly with the exception of extraordinary circumstances agreed in advance). A full time, full year salary is paid in return for the longer working hours required during term time.

Staff at St Mary's Calne enjoy complimentary meals during term time, a generous pension scheme, access to an employee assistance programme, friendly and supportive colleagues and fee remission on school fees for dependents where applicable. Full benefits and more information are detailed in the Applicant Pack.

About St Mary's Calne

St Mary’s Calne is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, a happy, purposeful and flourishing community of around 360 pupils with a 80% to 20% boarding to day ratio.

Founded in 1873, the school has been providing an outstanding education for girls for 150 years, and our alumnae have prominent positions in every profession from the law, politics and medicine to the arts, drama and sport. There is a strong tradition of the core academic subjects and strength in science and mathematics, as well as modern languages, arts and humanities.

Our Sixth Form is flourishing and highly successful, with over 120 girls. The girls benefit from exceptional careers advice and work hard to achieve their goals. Their academic results are outstanding and the girls go on to study at top UK and American universities; the striking range of courses they embark upon shows the wealth of choice available to our pupils. Many of the Sixth Form also undertake extensive pieces of independent research in the form of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), with 100% achieving A*s last year.

Located near the market town of Calne and amidst the natural beauty of the Wiltshire Downs, we are also within easy reach of the university towns of Bath, Bristol and Oxford and just over an hour by train from London. Our ideal location means that our girls benefit from a huge range of curriculum-enhancing opportunities as well as extra-curricular ones.

ISI May 2017:  Under the new ISI framework in both quality of Pupil Achievement and Pupil Development St Mary’s was awarded the highest possible grade – Excellent.  In addition, St Mary’s was found to be robustly compliant with all the ISI statutory standards in the Focused Compliance Inspection.

Our strategic plans for the next few years include the following:

  • To build on and develop a high expectation and success culture amongst pupils and staff.
  • To continue to develop and strengthen a fully integrated education for each girl which responds to her individual needs.
  • To develop a cutting edge curriculum and extra-curriculum that anticipates and responds to the needs of the workplace and life in the 21st century and allows girls to develop their agility of mind, their independence in learning and their adaptability.
  • To develop school structures, systems and facilities to support and enable our curriculum aims.
  • To ensure the high profile of St Mary’s is recognised in the local, national and international community.

St Mary’s offers positions on its own pay scale based on experience and expertise. Benefits include pension scheme, reduced school fees for dependents (including girls and boys up to 11 at St Margaret’s Preparatory School), a nominal fee for on site Sport Club membership (including access to a wide range of fitness classes, swimming pool and gym) and excellent term time meals.
