Job overview

An exciting opportunity for a developing librarian to take an active role in the professional running of a large and dynamic school library.

Library services role supporting pupils’ research, reading and independent study, offering a supported first step for graduates or early‑career professionals in librarianship.

Wellington College is a dynamic, ambitious and values led school community, combining academic excellence with a strong emphasis on personal development. Located in Crowthorne, Berkshire, our 400 acre estate provides a distinctive and inspiring place to work. The Mallinson Library plays a central role in College life, supporting pupils’ learning, curiosity and enjoyment of reading within a busy boarding and day school environment.

The Role

The Assistant Librarian (Development Role) supports the Head Librarian in delivering a welcoming, inclusive and well‑organised library service for pupils and staff. Working as part of a small, collaborative team, the role contributes to the effective use of print and digital resources, supports pupils with independent study and research, and helps ensure the Library remains an engaging and purposeful academic space.

This term time plus post (38 weeks per year) is designed as a supported development opportunity and is particularly well suited to a graduate or early‑career professional who is interested in developing a career in librarianship or information services within an educational setting. The role offers structured exposure to a wide range of library activities, allowing the successful candidate to build confidence, practical skills and professional judgement through hands‑on experience. Where the post holder is not yet professionally qualified, they will be expected to work towards an appropriate librarianship qualification within three years of appointment, with support from the College.

Working closely with pupils, teaching staff and visitors, the Assistant Librarian plays an important role in encouraging reading for pleasure, supporting academic enquiry and helping pupils develop independent learning skills. Over time, and as experience and confidence grow, the role offers increasing responsibility, including contributing to research skills activities, supporting events and assisting with the day‑to‑day supervision of the Library. The successful candidate will be organised, approachable and keen to learn, with a positive attitude to working in a busy, pupil‑facing environment.

Working in a school environment offers a unique sense of purpose and community. You will be supported with training, development and opportunities to grow your skills, and you’ll work alongside colleagues who are committed to delivering excellent service to every member of the Wellington community.

The Malim Prize is a rite of passage for all third formers, a creative research challenge that celebrates independent thinking.

In Middle School, pupils tailor their GCSEs from a wide range of options, with most taking nine or ten subjects. They also study either the HPQ or our bespoke Fragments course, alongside regular Wellbeing sessions.
