Salesian College is an Independent Roman Catholic Grammar School for boys aged 11‐16 years with a vibrant coeducational Sixth Form. There are approximately 640 students on roll. The Library & Learning Resource Centre contains approximately 7,000 resources and has 13 computers for student use and four laptops.

Responsibilities                                                                                                                        

In order to maintain a comprehensive service to staff, students  and families, and to help young people to be successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens, especially in line with the Salesian ethos, the duties of the Assistant Librarian include, but are not restricted to, the following:

Particular Responsibilities                                                                                                         

·        Supervising the library in the absence of the Librarian.

·        Supervision of the daily Homework session after school in the library.

·        Mounting and maintaining displays

·        Assisting in the teaching of Year 7 Study Skills/Induction lessons.

·        Communicating with staff or students in library matters.

·        Being able to access and use the wealth of resources in the library, including ICT, and to assist both staff and students in their requirements. This includes helping students to develop into independent learners.

 To assist the Librarian                                                                                                                

·        At breaks and lunchtimes ‐ working and talking with students, managing learning and behaviour.

·        Dealing with ICT issues and photocopying.

·        Training and working with student librarians and being involved in library activities such as, World Book Day, The Salesian Book Awards and use of games and puzzles.

·        Using the library’s Reading Cloud administration system fully.

·        Supervising occasional individual entrance exams.

·        Culling or mending old resources, selecting & ordering new resources and entering them on to the library system.

·        Ordering stationery.

·        Keeping the library and resources tidy, attractive and well‐maintained, including refreshing book displays. This can include ad hoc projects around the school.

·        Stock checking.

·        Being prepared to be more fully involved in extra‐curricular library events and in the life of the College generally.

·        Assisting with and running regular author events.

·        Promoting the Library to different subject areas (Language Week etc.) and schemes to promote boys’ reading, to include preparing and running seasonal quizzes.

·        To carry out such duties as reasonably requested by the Headmaster, Deputy Headteachers or Librarian.

·        To undertake other relevant duties as required by the Headmaster.

·        Co-ordination and production of termly newsletter with students.

 Continuing Personal & Professional Development     

·        To attend appropriate training courses and meetings relevant to the changing needs of the College.

It would be an advantage for candidates to have recent experience of working in a library environment. The candidate will possess appropriate qualifications, have empathy with young people, good interpersonal skills, be able to communicate clearly and be able to work under pressure. Competence using all resources including ICT, and a willingness to further develop ICT skills in line with changing educational needs, is essential, as is the ability to cope with the physical element of the job. A good sense of humor is also an asset!
