Do you have what it takes to lead a class and be our Assistant PE Teacher?


You will be knowledgeable, energetic and able to lead a class. You will keep students motivated, engaged and willing to stay fit and active throughout their PE lessons. The successful candidate will act as a role model, with an emphasis on engaging and increasing the participation and enthusiasm of girls. The perfect candidate for this position will have experience in a similar role working within a school setting, or will have done sports coaching with children in the past and they will be confident in teaching a range of sports to pupils aged from  4 -11. The successful candidate will be expected to run after school clubs between 3.45pm and 4.45pm daily and will sometimes need to be available before school to prepare sports teams for specific competitions. Coldfall Primary School is 3 form entry school rated outstanding by OFSTED and has a long track record of sustained excellence in PE including competitive success at local, borough and national level. In addition, over 90% of children will have represented the school in competition by the time they finish Year 6. 

You will work alongside the school’s PE Teacher to plan and deliver high-quality physical education for all pupil groups, both inside and outside of PE lessons as well as helping to ensure a clear progression of skills is in place to enable all children to be at least competent in a range of sports, with a high proportion achieving mastery. You will help deliver targeted Continuing Professional Development to teaching and non-teaching staff to improve practice across the school, resulting in better outcomes for pupils. Staff are expected to work within the framework of the school’s policies and ethos, and contribute to the development of the whole school.

Main duties

1.     To contribute directly to the development of a high quality PE curriculum, including planning and delivery of lessons.

2.     To support the PE Teacher through team-teaching, supporting targeted groups and delivering sessions related to areas of expertise.

3.     To teach lessons independently where appropriate within the PE curriculum.

4.     To complete relevant sections of end-of-year reports for children across the school.

5.     To develop opportunities for inter and intra-school competitions. This will include identifying pupils to participate and organising pre-school training sessions in the build-up to tournaments.

6.     To keep up-to-date records of children who have taken part in external competitions to ensure a wide number of pupils have the opportunity to compete.  

7.     To undertake all relevant administrative tasks, including: planning, reports of competitions for the school website and newsletter, and keeping PE display boards up-to-date in line with school and Sports Mark expectations.

8.     To ensure effective maintenance and storage of resources and equipment.

9.     To assist the PE Teacher with the development and delivery of a cycle of CPD, to include teaching and non-teaching staff.

10. To encourage physical activity at break and lunch times through setting up games and sports, to include the development of Teaching Assistants' practice at these times.

11. To deliver daily extra-curricular clubs as part of the school’s club program. 

12. To take part in the school’s cycle of lesson observations and performance management.


Candidate Specification

Candidates must demonstrate clear PE and coaching skills in addition to an ability to fulfill all the duties outlined above.

Candidates must have experience of coaching with children in a variety of sports (ideally dance, gymnastics and netball).

Knowledge and skills required

  •         PE/Coaching qualifications

  •         Basic First Aid
