Job overview

Assistant Subject Leader of Music

MPS - UPS plus TLR 2b

37 hours per week, Permanent

Required for September 2023

Egglescliffe is a highly successful and oversubscribed mixed comprehensive 11 – 18 school. Our visitors comment on the extremely positive learning atmosphere at the school and the focus on every student achieving and exceeding their potential. We are part of a dynamic and supportive MAT, the Vision Academy Learning Trust, which currently consists of three secondary schools, of which one is a teaching school, and five primary schools. Music is a priority within the Trust and the Director of Music works across the Trust as well as leading the department at Egglescliffe.

Within the school is a thriving, high-achieving and ambitious music department. Last year nearly 50% of GCSE Music students achieved Grade 9 and 80% of A level students A*/A. This summer, fourteen students moved onto Conservatoire/University Music including Oxford and the Royal Colleges – many on scholarships.  Each year we have a high uptake at both GCSE and A-level. The department consists of three classroom teachers, a full-time colleague responsible for all aspects of musical performance and a wide-ranging team of instrumental and singing teachers covering all instruments, musical genres, and a variety of singing styles. Hundreds of students have weekly singing or instrument lessons within the department and indeed across the Trust including primary schools that feed into Egglescliffe.

Across the year we perform a variety of concerts and musicals, including a whole department concert in the summer term that involves hundreds of young musicians. We also work in close partnership with the Gabrieli Consort and Players, under the direction of Paul McCreesh, and are a key partner in their Roar programme. Recently we have sung a programme of Coronation Anthems with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, and Creation, Gerontius, and the music of Praetorius at York Minster and Durham Cathedral with the Gabrielis.

We believe that the department at Egglescliffe is an exciting musical environment for students and staff and would suit a candidate who wants to make full use of their musicality and enjoys being ambitious for the young musicians in their care.

We are looking for an outstanding classroom practitioner who is a strong musician, and has high aspirations and the enthusiasm, energy and commitment to support the leadership of our truly outstanding Music department. The successful candidate needs to display passion and leadership skills to support the Director of Music in leading the curriculum at all key stages, including GCSE and A level, ensuring excellence at all levels. This is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to work in a middle leadership role working with the Director of Music to provide both excellent curricular and extracurricular opportunities. Excellent practical musicianship is essential, the ability to lead ensembles to a high standard, and/or excellent keyboard skills are highly desirable.

This is a rare opportunity to support the leadership of a genuinely outstanding music department with a longstanding national reputation for musical excellence both academically and in performance. We have large GCSE and A level classes of highly motivated students, a substantial, diverse and highly successful extra-curricular programme, and a full team of directly employed instrumental and vocal teachers. We teach both curricular and small group instrumental lessons across a number of our feeder primary schools. We believe in high level musical performance, but we are also a very diverse and inclusive department who encourage all students in their music making.

Our Music Department is:

  • Highly successful, extremely well resourced, and nationally renowned
  • Thriving at GCSE and A level with large class sizes and excellent results
  • Underpinned by a large team of instrumental tutors who are all employed on contract, with over 300 students undertaking individual instrument lessons each week
  • Consistently successful in extra-curricular ensemble performance at a national level and producing young musicians who are in a variety of national ensembles
  • Working very closely with a number of our cluster primary schools to develop the young musicians of the future
  • Committed to sustaining and improving results across all levels and Key Stages
  • A highly collaborative and supportive department
  • Innovative, creative and student centred
  • Following Eduqas at GCSE and A Level

The successful candidate must:

  • Be an enthusiastic and committed teacher with vision, drive and commitment
  • Have a passion for developing student engagement and educational progress
  • Have an innovative approach to teaching and learning and model excellence in the classroom
  • Be proficient in planning, assessment and target setting so that all children make good or better progress
  •  Have an ability to inspire and support all students to achieve their full potential
  • Be someone with outstanding subject knowledge to support the leadership and development of KS3, KS4 and KS5 Music curriculum
  • Have very strong practical musicianship and at least competent keyboard skills
  • Have the ability to enable young musicians to aspire for excellence
  • Have an ability to raise attainment at KS3, 4 and 5, having a measurable impact at both an individual and departmental level
  • Be able to support the Director in leading the monitoring and evaluation of quality teaching and standards.
  •  Have an ability to develop innovation in teaching and learning, motivating and inspiring both colleagues and students through outstanding teaching.
  • Able to motivate and inspire staff and students to achieve their full potential
  • Hold a relevant teaching qualification and QTS
