The Marlborough Science Academy occupies a spacious site on the southern edge of the City of St Albans. We are very proud of our school and have all worked very hard to achieve our “Good” OFSTED grading in March 2014.

Our ethos is simple, we want children to enjoy coming to school, to feel safe and make exceptional progress through outstanding teaching and nurturing.  We are an oversubscribed school of 1150 students in KS3, KS4 and with a growing post 16 provision working within the Alban Learning Partners consortium including Loreto, STAGS, Townsend and Samuel Ryder.

We are exceptionally proud of our post 16 provision which is inclusive and whose value added puts us very firmly in the top 25% of schools nationally.   Full school uniform is expected from all students and professional dress from staff. The school’s behaviour policy gives an emphasis to positive reward as well as sanctions, and we operate in a calm environment, the Head is very clear that there is no shouting.    We work closely with the parents of our students and communicate school news to parents weekly via the school newsletter.

We have a thriving and supportive body of parents who volunteer through the PTA to deliver a wide range of fundraising activities and their contributions daily to school life are exceptional.

There is a commitment to developing every member of staff, reflected in a range of development activities.  These include access to courses, on-site coaching and observation programmes, regular reviews, full induction programme, opportunities to contribute to whole-school initiatives, and regular opportunities to present ideas to the line manager. Performance management forms a yearly cycle with ample opportunity to discuss career aspirations and how to develop your role within the academy. We actively seek to recruit and support non-teaching staff who are committed to a pathway to teach. In many cases we can support with classroom experience, secure training positions and then look to employ once qualified. We have a robust induction and mentoring program for all new staff regardless of experience to ensure that new colleagues settle quickly and are supported to be successful in their new role. Our track record in mentoring staff towards middle management and leadership roles is impressive.

St Albans is a vibrant and well connected market town in south east Hertfordshire. Travel to London or Milton Keynes is fast via the Thameslink rail line. There is a good bus service to areas such as Luton, Hemel Hempstead and Hatfield as well as surrounding villages.

I look forward to meeting all future applicants who are considering a career move to teach at our school
