The Springfields Academy, Reach South Academy Trust is seeking to appoint an exceptional Autism/SEND P.E. Teacher to join the School in January 2022


Hours/Contract: Full-time or Part-Time, Permanent Contract. 


The Role:  We are looking for an Autism/SEND P.E. Teacher who is passionate about supporting the Physical and Sensory development of our pupils with autism. This is a unique opportunity to be a part of a wider Physical and Sensory team which fuses P.E, Therapy, Outdoor Education and Creative Arts. 


Our Physical and Sensory curriculum approaches are vital in our aim to build safe, independent lives for autistic young people. The Autism/SEND P.E. Teacher will lead on Physical and Sensory sessions and interventions that meet the wide range of pupil need. We are particularly (but not exclusively) interested in candidates with a specialist in gymnastics, dance and/or outdoor education or those with an interest in therapy or the creative arts.


In the role of Autism/SEND P.E. Teachers you will be providing learners with the knowledge, skills and strategies they need to support their Physical and Sensory needs in order to live safely and independently within their community. You will consistently teach effective lessons that engage pupils with Physical and Sensory experiences and meet their specific needs. Additionally, to:

• assess, monitor and record pupil progress in P.E.;

• build effective working relationships with support staff, other teachers, middle leaders to further the development of the Quality of Education at the Academy.

Part of the excitement of teaching at the academy is the broad range of individuals that you will teach. Our young people with autism may have sensory needs, speech and language difficulties, or social, emotional needs. A key aspect of working at Springfields is taking the time to get to know pupils and being able to create a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment. 

You will be joining a happy, hardworking and well-established team of over 20 teachers across the academy. You will also work closely with our multi-disciplinary therapy team.

The Person: What we are looking for:

• Someone with a passion for P.E. and children's Physical and Sensory Development

• A specialism in gymnastics, dance, and/or outdoor education is beneficial (but not essential)

• A child-centred practitioner who responds to the individual needs of each child.

• A teacher with good knowledge and understanding of autism and social communication needs and appropriate strategies to support pupils with this need.

• A creative and flexible approach to teaching that builds success through challenge, personalisation and innovation.

• The confidence and skills to build positive relationships that help to break down barriers, build self-esteem.

• A commitment to enabling all our pupils to overcome their challenges and achieve their potential both socially and academically.

• An interest in therapy or the Creative Arts

• Job share opportunities and other flexible working initiatives available.

• Experience of primary, secondary or specialist provision beneficial.
