Job overview

One day at Baylab and suddenly you'll understand how exciting science can be. Why are bees so important for the pollination of flowers? What are enzymes? How do human genetic diagnostics work? And how do I become a scientist? These are questions we will soon be answering with the launch of Baylab in the UK.

Baylab is Bayer's exciting new science laboratory dedicated for use by schools and other groups of young people to take part in STEM workshops.

The Baylab Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the delivery of an inspirational programme of STEM-related hands-on experiments and activities based on inquiry and exploration within the new Baylab, which opens in Bayer's new HQ in January 2017.

The key responsibilities for this role:

DELIVER & DEVELOP Baylab PROGRAMME

  • Deliver and facilitate an inspirational programme of STEM-related hands-on experiments and activities for schools and other groups of young people that are based on inquiry and exploration
  • Maintain the quality of the programme for a range of young audiences and train other Baylab staff to do so to a similar quality
  • Adapt and develop STEM workshops to ensure that the Baylab content remains relevant to schools, the curriculum and young people

MANAGE OPERATION OF Baylab

  • Have overall responsibility for equipping and maintaining the safe operation of the laboratory
  • Maintain and manage a booking system for local schools to visit Baylab that ensures optimum use of the space
  • Have overall responsibility for stock control of consumables within the laboratory
  • In consultation with head of Corporate Affairs & Brand, prepare, control and monitor a Baylab budget and ensure that targets are met
  • Develop an ongoing system of evaluation that is appropriate to the needs of Bayer and to report on the performance of the laboratory annually

WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SCHOOLS & OTHER ORGANISATIONS

  • Be responsible for forging links with teachers and schools
  • Manage Bayer's key partner relationships for the successful operation of Baylab incl:
  • Education Business Partnerships, particularly West Berkshire
  • Royal Institution in London of which Baylab is a partner hub

PROMOTION & EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

  • To work with the Bayer communications department as required promoting the work of the Baylab and the organisation in general
  • To develop and maintain a programme of hands-on science activities for Bayer employees and general family visitors to access when the Baylab is not being used for organised school groups 

WHAT KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED?

Essential

  • Science degree or equivalent
  • Experience of science education, including teaching at any level or other practical project work related to science education
  • Some experience of laboratory work, either commercial or research based
  • Enthusiasm for enriching the scientific experience of young people
  • Excellent, demonstrable STEM communication skills

Desirable

  • Innovative and flexible mind set
  • Ability to adopt an ambassadorial role for Baylab in contacts with schools, universities, local and national government, media and other bodies
  • Good organisational management and planning skills
  • Good IT skills

The role may include occasional evening or weekend work.
