We are looking for a diligent, dynamic, flexible and enthusiastic Behaviour for Learning Mentor to join our team. 

The Holmewood School is an independent day school for neurodivergent children and young people aged from seven to 19 who have a primary diagnosis of Autism. Our young people are broadly similar to their mainstream peers in their academic ability but require support with communication and interaction, executive functioning, anxiety, functional skills and other needs related to their diagnosis. Many of our young people also have co-occurring diagnoses, such as ADHD and dyslexia. 


Qualifications & experience:

  • Effective, recent and relevant ASD education experience essential (at least 2 years).
  • At least 3 years experience working with young people with behaviours perceived as challenging . 
  • Experience working with young people with mental health diagnoses (these might be stand alone or as a comorbidity).  
  • Previous experience in a school/unit/PRU as a Learning Mentor, Behaviour Coordinator or similar.
  • Experience of innovative and creative teaching methodology that you could introduce to the school.
  • Experience of working across the full age range. 
  • Appropriate qualifications in psychology, behaviour or other related areas are desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills.


The successful candidate will have the ability and desire to:

  • Work with students who could be perceived as challenging, withdrawn, or difficult to reach. 
  • Devise and implement plans and strategies to support students in overcoming challenges to their learning and social and emotional regulation
  • Model and support specific student interventions or class interventions to class teachers and support staff. 
  • Inspire and lead TAs and teachers. 
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with a range of stakeholders orally and in writing. 
  • Communicate and work closely with the multi-disciplinary team. 
  • Manage their own workload and meet deadlines.
  • Carry out assessment and observations related to students wellbeing, resilience and regulations skills to support planning of specific targets and strategies. 
  • Take an active part in targets setting and developments of specific resources to support webling of the students e.g. social stories, comic strip conversations etc 
  • Challenge student and staff perspectives on behaviour, ensuring that positive and proactive behaviour management strategies are at the core of our work.
  • Play a full part in the life of the school community.


Main accountabilities:

  • Ensure all learners are safe at all times (physically and mentally).
  • Communicate clearly, calmly and in a timely manner in all emergency situations.  
  • Coordinate, support and effectively deploy staff supporting students in crisis.  
  • Work with teachers and senior leaders to ensure lessons are motivating and engage all students. 
  • Work with parents to ensure consistency across settings.  
  • Oversee and support development of effective support plans for our cohort. 
  • Deliver training to staff and parents on a range of topics Attend professional development/training, meetings, conferences etc. relating to wellbeing and behaviour.  
  • Oversee individual student risk assessment related to difficulties around social and emotional regulation.  
  • Devise, implement and oversee individualised plans and programmes with the MDT as needed.  
  • Be aware of policies, risk assessments and procedures.
  • Monitor, assess, record and report on progress.
  • Analyse school behaviour data to inform interventions for specific students and class groups.
  • Provide the highest standards of professional support to staff and students, in order to support students to achieve their full potential.
  • Other activities that are within the scope of the role.

We are located in North London on two sites. Our Lower School is conveniently situated directly opposite Woodside Park station on the Northern line. Our Upper School is located in leafy Muswell Hill (backing on to Alexandra Palace). We work closely with the other schools in our group, have extensive community links and believe in ‘thinking differently’ and being as creative as possible in our teaching.  

Experience of working with young people with autism, behaviour needs or mental health needs will be highly beneficial.

 Interviews and teaching observations will be held at The Holmewood School (site to be confirmed) week commencing Monday the 12th of June.
