Job overview

The role of the Science Technician is to help facilitate the delivery of the School’s science curriculum and thus enhance students’ learning. Principle activities are supporting teaching staff in practical work, preparing, clearing and cleaning lesson materials. Science technicians are affiliated to a particular science department or site, but we expect our science technicians to work as a team, and their duties may extend beyond their primary subject area as and when the need arises. From time to time, technicians might be asked to provide assistance in other areas of the school, as and when their science duties allow. The duties of the technicians are overseen by the Senior Technician.

The successful applicant will be working with the Biology department, but may be required to support in other departments as well. Each science department works together to provide the school with an established faculty of science, to be able to provide students with the best understanding of the scientific world. Each department are well resourced with dedicated laboratories that are equipped for a wide range of practical activities.

The Science Faculty have an excellent track record of achievement in public examinations. Students are encouraged to be intellectually curious and to develop an effective independent work ethos. As expected, for subjects heavily dependent on the application of subject-specific knowledge, there is an emphasis on continuous learning of the subject material alongside the development of complementary skills such as complex multi-step problem-solving, connection-finding and abstraction, without which students can struggle to apply their learning effectively. We therefore strive to assist students in developing these skills whilst acquiring the required subject content.

The Schools are part of the great heritage of Stamford and a symbol of its vibrancy and evolution. The Schools have been established in Stamford since 1532, providing a first class education for children. Today the Schools remain interwoven with Stamford life, to which our students, teachers and parents contribute greatly. At Stamford we have one simple and overriding aim, that is to inspire our students and light fires within them.

The schools educate 1650 pupils at the Stamford Junior School for children aged 2-11, Stamford School for students aged 11-16, and Stamford Sixth Form for students aged 16-18.

This is a really exciting time to be joining the School as after nearly 500 years as a boys’ school and 200 years as a girls’ school, we have joined together as a fully co-educational school. This restructure is giving us the opportunity to look at all aspects of school life with fresh eyes, and we are looking at everything from how we provide the best possible pastoral care to how we shape the timetable, how we make best use of our estate, to how AI can support classroom learning. It is a big change, but a once in a generation opportunity to really set up the School for the next hundred years.

After this positive change, stamfordians will still be able to leave here poised for success in the real world - quietly confident, kind, positive, hardworking, unassuming and resilient. We are independent schools nurturing independent minds.

"I love the idea of preparing our kids from the school room to the boardroom in the 21st century, wherever that boardroom is in a rainforest in Brazil or as a CEO or working with a charity in India. Just as we have a big responsibility, so will they. I want them not just to be content to live in the world but to change it. Exciting!”

Principal, Will Phelan
