Job overview

Emanuel School is looking for a hard-working and enthusiastic Boathouse Manager to join the School on a full-time basis.

As the Boathouse Manager, you will play a vital role in overseeing rowing operations and providing exceptional support services to our rowing community. You will maintain the highest standards of safety, maintenance, and logistical coordination, ensuring that our rowing procedures are diligently followed, promoting a culture of safety and best practices. You will also maintain our boathouse facilities and equipment, making sure that they meet all compliance requirements, enabling our rowers to compete at the highest levels safely.

In addition to managing day-to-day operations, you will be responsible for our rowing logistics. This will include coordinating equipment transportation for competitions, training venues, and camps to loading and unloading trailers. This will involve planning of resources and staff time to drive to events both nationally and occasionally internationally as required.

You will be a self-motivated and robust individual, possessing excellent interpersonal skills. You will exhibit an approachable and supportive coaching style that inspires and empowers our rowers to achieve to the best of their abilities. A clean driving license with D1 endorsement and towing endorsement is essential, as you will be driving with boat trailers. You will also possess a rowing qualification and relevant rowing experience and experience operating near water, preferably on a fast-moving river. You will demonstrate a technical knowledge of rowing, boats and equipment. Hands-on maintenance experience is essential, ensuring that our equipment is always well-maintained.

This role requires flexibility on hours and will entail some weekend and evening work. Time off in lieu will be awarded and taken in agreement with the Director of Rowing. Holiday rowing & racing takes place and there will be busy times of the year between February and July.

Working at Emanuel

There is a genuine buzz at the school. Colleagues enjoy their work and, like the pupils, are ambitious for the school.

Everyone works hard here, and anyone joining the school should expect to do so. There’s a strong sense of community and source of friendship. From the briefing to all staff, to the half termly staff meetings, termly consultative group meetings and a common room committee, there’s ongoing dialogue about the school’s aims.

We aim to look after our staff too. We have an appraisal scheme with a focus on the employee’s professional development; we sponsor postgraduate courses and a range of training opportunities; we offer a healthcare plan via Simply Health that includes counselling and medical support; and we’re committed to supporting staff wellbeing. On a more practical level, all staff benefit from good pension provision and free lunches.

About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1100 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 89% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 39% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 64%. This is 31% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic achievement in the country. The last ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next three years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both traditionally areas of strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in the 2023 Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied and fulfilling working life, giving them a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment.

We wish you the best of luck with your application.
