Job overview

Kent College is a co-educational school with a Methodist foundation. The school is located in Canterbury, just one hour from the centre of London by train. The Senior School (11 – 18 years) has some 600 pupils, approximately one-third boarding and two-thirds day, and a thriving Junior School and nursery. Uniquely in the local market the school is also lucky to have its own small farm on a combined campus of over eighty acres. The school has a strong commitment to internationalism and has two sister campuses in Dubai and West Cairo.

Kent College is proud of its A Level and IB students' track record of academic success, with consistently excellent exam performance leading to enhanced destinations.

This is a fabulous opportunity to join a school with a high reputation for academic standards and work for a happy, caring, and successful school in which pupils feel supported and encouraged to aim for high standards of achievement and conduct.

The school was graded as excellent in all categories in the inspection conducted by ISI in October 2022, the Independent Schools Inspectorate that conducts inspections on behalf of the Secretary of State for Education.

To support the school’s recent growth and future ambitions, we are keen to identify an outstanding Bursar and Clerk to the Governors with significant financial, commercial, leadership skills and experience who will partner with the Head and the Governors in leading the next chapter of the school’s development to expand and improve our estate, facilities and services to pupils, parents and staff, over the next 5 years and beyond.

The Bursar and Clerk to the Governor’s role is a senior non-teaching leadership position in the school. With responsibility for Finance, IT, HR, Compliance, Company Secretarial, Estates, Facilities and Services, it is wide in scope and remit and both challenging and rewarding. We are therefore seeking an exceptional general manager with strong prior financial and commercial experience.

The successful candidate will be an individual of proven senior leadership ability, a strategic thinker and able to establish highly effective, collaborative working relationships with Governors and colleagues at all levels. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, exceptional financial acumen and robust commercial judgement will be essential.

Applicants will need to have a genuine interest in and empathy for education however prior school bursar experience is not a pre-requisite.

Kent College is being assisted in the recruitment of this key appointment by the Independent Schools’ Bursars Association (ISBA), from whom a Candidate Pack can be obtained by sending an email to recruiting@theisba.org.uk

Alternatively if you would like to discuss the position with ISBA prior to applying, please contact Lucy Wyatt on 07817 038009.

Closing date for applications is 29th April. Screening interviews conducted by the ISBA recruitment team will be held for long-listed candidates during this period and short-listed candidates will attend first stage interviews w/c 6th May 2024 with the final stage interviews w/c 13th May 2024.

About Kent College, Canterbury

The pleasant red-brick buildings of Kent College are situated in a semi-rural position overlooking the beautiful cathedral city of Canterbury. The school sits in 80 acres (32 hectares) of land with extensive sports’ fields, a School Farm and a Riding Centre. The centre of Canterbury, with its wide selection of shops and restaurants is a 5-minute journey by car, while the school sports' fields back on to Blean Woods, one of the largest areas of ancient woodland in England. Pupils get the best of both worlds – a healthy, safe environment close to beautiful countryside, but with easy access to Canterbury’s excellent facilities including theatres, cinemas and its world-heritage cathedral.

Since its foundation in 1885, the School has always excelled in the academic, musical and sporting spheres. However, Kent College Canterbury is probably best known for its exceptionally caring atmosphere where students from all faiths, countries and background thrive in a safe, friendly and caring environment. The School has an outstanding reputation for bringing out the best in every pupil and achieving excellent academic results. The sporting facilities are first class and include an all-weather artificial hockey pitch, which is converted for tennis use in the summer. A well-resourced Dyslexia Unit gives specialist teaching to students with this particular need.

Kent College is a happy, caring and successful school in which pupils feel supported and encouraged to aim for high standards of achievement and conduct.  The school was inspected by the Independent School Inspectorate in October 2022 and was found to be excellent and compliant in all aspects.

In August 2016 Kent College opened a 3-18 school in Dubai, and in September 2022 the primary stages of Kent College West Cairo accepted its first students.

Summer 2019 brought the opening of a state-of-the-art 600-seater auditorium, The Great Hall. The hall is used by the whole school for worship and as a versatile and practical space for the college’s highly regarded drama and music departments as well as for being available for use by the local community.

The boarding community includes students from over 40 countries, and a particular strength is the International Study Centre, where students whose English language skills need development can receive specialist teaching and be progressively integrated into the mainstream curriculum.
