Job overview

Dulwich Prep London is one of the most prestigious preparatory schools in the country, offering day education to around 860 pupils in South London between the ages of 3 and 13.  The School is based on two sites in Dulwich and there are also three playing field sites totalling over 25 acres within walking distance.

The Governing Body is seeking to appoint a dynamic and inspiring individual to join the School’s Senior Leadership Team as Bursar & Clerk to the Governors on the retirement of the incumbent after 14 years. The appointee will manage the support, business and commercial aspects of the School and will require the vision and drive to lead the future development of the School’s facilities.

The Bursar will work closely with the Head in establishing the strategic direction of the School and additional sources of income. He/she will lead and manage a diverse support staff, oversee the School’s finances, including the provision of bursaries, and maintain strategic oversight of the School’s estate and buildings, including residential accommodation, of catering and cleaning, human resources and information technology. The Bursar is supported by a Director of Finance and a Director of Operations as shown on the attached organisation chart.

As Clerk to the Governors he/she will support the governance of the School, arranging Board and sub-committee meetings as required, producing prompt and accurate minutes and ensuring that the required regulatory returns are submitted on a timely basis. The Clerk will liaise closely with the Chairman of Governors in respect of the School’s financial strategy.

The successful candidate will possess proven leadership ability, together with strategic vision and the capability to think laterally. Financial literacy and sound commercial judgement are essential. The Bursar will be able to establish effective and collaborative working relationships at all levels, both within the School and with external agencies.

Candidates should have a genuine interest in and support for independent education, but applications are invited from those with relevant experience in other sectors.
