Job overview

This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in the continuing strategic success of a vibrant School where girls flourish academically, creatively, physically and morally.

St George’s is a thriving independent boarding and day school, educating approximately 270 girls, based in a beautiful, leafy, 30-acre site within a short walk of Ascot High Street and approximately 25 miles from central London. The School has a welcoming ethos, with a focus on developing girls to reach their highest potential in whichever pursuit they choose, sitting in the top 4.5% of schools in the UK for value added in public exams. With a newly opened 25m, six lane swimming pool complimenting existing facilities, renowned catering, and excellent teaching and support staff, St George’s is facing the new decade with confidence.

St George’s is now seeking a new Bursar, who will provide outstanding leadership to the School’s support staff while being a vital, strategic voice on the Senior Leadership Team. Working closely with the Headmistress, and supporting and advising the Governors, the new Bursar will work to deliver the School’s overarching strategy, while managing the day-to-day operation of the School.

The successful candidate will lead and shape a sizeable team of people across the finance, IT, HR and operations functions, as well as working closely with those on the teaching and pastoral side of the school.

The Headmistress and Governors are seeking a candidate with a breadth of experience, capable of providing inspiring leadership to a diverse team. Candidates will have significant management and strategy experience, not necessarily gained in a school context but certainly within a complex organisation with numerous stakeholders. They will have strong financial management credentials, drive and determination to deliver innovative solutions, and excellent communication skills underpinned by empathy, flexibility and a collaborative approach.

St George’s School is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children at the School. Therefore, this appointment will be subject to a successful disclosure check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

About St George's School

St George’s is a girls’ independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18 years. We are located approximately 25 miles west of central London on a beautiful, leafy 30 acre site, within walking distance of Ascot High Street. We are a welcoming school with a warm sense of community and visitors often comment on the perceptible supportive and cheerful atmosphere.

Most girls join St George's in Year 7; there are around 35 girls in each of the first two years and we keep class sizes deliberately small so that each girl is individually known. An additional class is added at Year 9 with girls joining from 13+ prep schools and girls may also join in the Sixth Form, and occasionally in Year 8 and Year 10.

We believe that a happy and successful school is one where all pupils have the opportunities to develop their strengths. The richness of opportunities within and outside the classroom are fundamental elements of the St George's experience. This allows the girls to foster the confidence, independence and academic curiosity that lead to success.

Our academic results are impressive, with the 'value-added' in public examinations a real strength. We understand how girls learn effectively and we regularly add at least one grade higher at GCSE and A Level than baseline testing would suggest. As the girls progress through the school, bespoke advice on subject options, universities and careers as part of a thorough academic tracking process, gives each girl and her parents a sense of where her strengths lie and where she should be heading.

We also offer an extensive range of opportunities, clubs and activities with a significant focus on the arts, music and sport. The girls work hard and play hard, they value each other's abilities and there is a positive an supportive pastoral and boarding ethos.

St George's is a place where girls flourish academically, creatively, physically and morally , a place where risks can be taken, lessons are learnt and challenges are welcomed. We strive for the very best for our girls and by developing their love of learning, their academic potential and their individual talents, we are able to nurture them to become happy, responsible, well balanced and resilient young women in the twenty-first century.
