Job overview

Sherborne School

Appointment of a Bursar

One of the UK’s pre-eminent independent schools, Sherborne provides an outstanding all-boys boarding education in an idyllic market town.

Sherborne is thriving under the leadership of Dr Dominic Luckett who became Headmaster and Chief Executive in January 2016. With the opening of a new boarding house to meet the increasing demand for places, the development of £13m state-of-the-art sports centre and plans to expand the international footprint through Sherborne Schools Worldwide, a joint venture with Sherborne Girls, this is a dynamic organisation on an exciting upward trajectory.

Dr Luckett and the Governors seek an outstanding Bursar to provide strong strategic, financial and operational leadership at an important stage in the School’s evolution. As a key contributor to whole school decision-making, the new Bursar will serve on the Senior Leadership Team and as Clerk to the Governors.

The successful candidate will combine experience of managing complex, multi-disciplinary and support functions with excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills. The Bursar will be a strong strategic partner to the Headmaster and Chief Executive, bringing outstanding commercial skills and entrepreneurial instincts to ensure Sherborne continues to flourish. Previous independent school experience is not a pre-requisite, although sympathy with and some understanding of the sector would be an advantage. Applications are encouraged from candidates with commercial, charitable, private sector and public sector backgrounds.

For further information on this role, including information on how to apply, please visit https://candidates.perrettlaver.com/vacancies/ quoting reference 4545. The closing date for applications is 08:30 GMT on Thursday 20th February 2020.

Sherborne School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful candidate must be willing to undergo an enhanced disclosure through the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Sherborne is a boys’ independent school situated in the shadow of Sherborne Abbey. Founded by Royal Charter in 1550, the school has roots going back to the origins of the See of Sherborne in 705. There are eight boarding houses accommodating a total of about 550 boys (aged 13-18). Sherborne School is an extraordinary community with a rich heritage and ambitious outlook.  The boys are talented, engaged and interesting, and staff are likewise.  The co-curricular provision is of outstanding breadth and quality.
