Job overview

St James Independent Schools comprises three fee-paying institutions for children aged 3 to 18 years old. The Preparatory School (incorporating a Nursery) and Senior Girls’ School are based in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, whilst the Senior Boys’ School is located in Ashford, Surrey.

The Preparatory School benefits from a beautiful courtyard leading to spacious classrooms, a large playground, a well-equipped gymnasium, a refectory, library, music rooms, an art and craft studio and an assembly hall with a stage and theatre lighting.

As Bursar, you will play a key role within the senior leadership team and are vital to the smooth running of the schools. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will manage the day-to-day operations of the school in conjunction with the Head.

You will have direct responsibility for the non-academic management of the school and will take the lead on matters relating to finance, estates, health and safety, and legal and regulatory compliance. This is an exciting opportunity to play an integral role in developing the schools’ vision and for enhancing its operational and physical infrastructure.

To be successful, you will possess a proven track record of providing ‘best in class’ operational delivery across a comparable, customer facing portfolio; ideally within the education sector. You will be an adept manager with a strong commercial acumen and a proven track record in managing diverse, multi-disciplinary teams. You will also need to demonstrate a solid understanding of effective business and financial management, including risk management.

This role will suit professionals with a high level of personal credibility and demonstrable experience in implementing a strategic vision.

The Management Recruitment Group (MRG) has been exclusively retained for this appointment. All direct and third party applications will be forwarded to MRG.

Closing date: Monday, 6 January 2020.

St James Schools is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including reference checks and, for the successful candidate, an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check.

About St James Preparatory School

St James Prep School is a co-educational IAPS day prep and nursery school for children aged 2-11. An oasis of calm in bustling Kensington, the school is resourced with enviable outside space (including a forest school), a fully-resourced teaching kitchen, science labs, and a new ICT Suite.

The school prides itself on adding value both to the academic results and the character of its pupils. Lessons start and end with The Pause – a moment of stillness that supports focus and wellbeing. Love of learning is the preferred route to success so that pupils get great results for the right reasons, and without the stress of a hothouse atmosphere. Pupils can progress on to senior girls’ or boys’ schools – the entry is automatic. But the emphasis is on choice with a robust 11+ programme.

The Good Schools Guide describes the School as, ‘Unique. A relaxed, yet focused atmosphere unlike any we have encountered elsewhere.’

St James Prep was inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in October 2019 and graded ‘excellent’ in all areas.
