Job overview

An exciting opportunity to play a key role in a first-class prep school, working closely with a particularly dynamic Head as she continues to develop all aspects of the school and its educational offering.   Pennthorpe is located in Rudgwick, a large village on the borders of Surrey and West Sussex, serving an affluent local market and offering an excellent education that prepares almost 300 children from 2 to 13 for a range of quality senior schools.

Pupil numbers have been growing steadily in recent years and the school’s truly excellent provision during the lockdowns of 2020 has led to a surge in enquiries from families around the area.  The Board has an adventurous view of the future and there are exciting and ambitious plans which the Bursar will help turn into reality.

The Bursar’s role has broad responsibility for the school’s business, infrastructure and support services. Working closely with the Head, he or she is a key member of the senior team and is also Clerk to the Governors.

The ideal candidate will be someone who genuinely welcomes variety and can spin lots of plates without breaking too many of them! You will be financially savvy, a strategic thinker who also understands the practicalities of life, a skilled and sensitive communicator, and a can-do team player who enjoys facilitating others. You must be happy with big ideas and small detail, have excellent admin skills and good attention to detail, and high levels of computer literacy. If that’s not enough, it would be a bonus if you already know something of how schools work, of facilities management and of regulatory compliance, but the sort of person we are looking for will soon pick up what is needed.

If you are ready for a lively role in a lively school with lively colleagues, Pennthorpe could be your ideal next move.

Pennthorpe is a co-educational independent preparatory day school located in the village of Rudgwick, along the Surrey/Sussex border, for children ages 2 to 13 years. Pennthorpe sits within a beautiful 25-acre site with extensive facilities and 16 acres of luscious woodland.

Pennthorpe is renowned for an innovative curriculum, exceptional pastoral care, immaculate, child-friendly campus and exceptional record for Scholarships and Common Entrance results. “Non nobis solum nati” is Pennthorpe’s official motto: “Born not for ourselves alone”. The ‘Pennthorpe Purpose’ relays the importance of positive contribution to the lives, and for the benefit, of others - not just to serve our own intentions. The children enjoy the most compelling educational experience possible; to nurture their positivity, tolerance, resilience and collaboration; and to prepare them to pursue their individual aspirations and contribute to the world.

Whether it’s academic achievement, consideration and kindness towards others, or an energetic and positive attitude – excellence underpins all that we do at Pennthorpe, and all that we strive to be together. Pennthorpe has been successfully preparing children for a variety of public senior schools since 1930.
