The Sheffield College

Reporting to the Group Accountant, the Business Support Accountant will be responsible for providing finance support to support departments.

This is an outward facing role within the Finance team, providing pro-active support to non-curriculum departments including Estates and IT. A proven ability to communicate complex financial information to non-finance managers is essential for this role. This will involve distilling detailed information into a summarised format with appropriate supporting commentary to present to the department manager.

A key responsibility of the role is the preparation of monthly management accounts for relevant departments. This will involve a review of costs, and meeting with the department manager to agree any re-allocation / prepayments or accruals which must be calculated and posted. Supporting the budget holder with a review of month end reports and purchase order requisitions / invoices is also within the role. This will require knowledge of the Agresso accounting system  The monthly accounts will also involve a review of pay costs charged to the department, and confirming any corrections necessary with the department manager, and liaising with the HR Payroll team as necessary. More tailored reporting is required for some departments.

The role supports the department manager with the preparation of quarterly forecasts, ahead of termly business reviews. This will involve reviewing actual costs and establishing a run rate, before overlaying expected changes. An analysis of differences to budget / previous forecast / last year will be required, pulling out one off factors. Forecasts must be prepared in sufficient detail to be uploaded into the accounting system. The role will also support a more detailed annual budget exercise, including a detailed build-up of pay and non-pay costs, and analysing the impact of any department restructure.  Excellent excel skills are required, as well as sound double entry knowledge.

Candidates will ideally have completed AAT or equivalent, and commenced studying towards an accountancy qualification.

In addition to technical accounting and excel skills, experience of using a complex finance system in a medium or large organisation is essential.
